Buying a House in Dutchess County NY - Where will you work? - Part 2
When buying a home in Dutchess County a major consideration will be where will you work?  The Dutchess County Economic Development Corporation has provided data as to who are the largest employers.  Topping the list is IBM with about 11,590 employees according to data available in March 2009.  Besides IBM many of the jobs are found in government with the majority of these jobs in the Poughkeepsie area.   With large schooel districts and 3 well known colleges, Vassar, Marist, and Bard, many are employed in the field of education. HealthQuest (which operates Vassar hospital and Northern Dutchess hospital) along with Saint Francis hospital provides many health care jobs.
However, many choose to work elsewhere such as New York City and Westchester to the south, Connecticut to the east and Albany in the North.
There are many ways to commute to and from Dutchess County NY; highways such as, the Taconic Parkway, NY State Thruway and Interstates 84 and 90, Metro North and Amtrak  train services, as well as commuter van pools.  The reason why some choose to commute is because of a better paying job or the job they desire is found elsewhere
