Where:  Matlacha, Florida.  Matlacha is the gateway to Pine Island.  It is a fishing village and an art colony. The town of 700 or so mostly free spirits is an oft-cited exemplar of "Old Florida." Even the residents of Matlacha (pronounced Mat-luhshay) routinely use that term to describe their town and its charm.  This place is so inviting that it is a favorte spot for people in the area to go for the weekend.
Matlacha housing started in the 20's. The bridge to Pine island was completed in 1927. Fishing shanties and squatter shacks appeared on the Island. Many of them have survived to present day. The area around the Matlacha Bridge was made famous by Ft. Myers author, Richard Powell, in his book, Pioneer Go Home. This book was made into an Elvis Presley movie called "Follow that Dream".
