There's a wonderful site www.cooltext.com that lets you create buttons and logos to use on the web. It's easy, process is very visual, and you can instantly see changes you are making. At the end, you can download the image, you can email it to yourself (or anyone), or you can also get a html code.
Very neat!

You can do much more elaborate stuff than that, there are plenty of fonts to choose from - both common not well known. You can even ownload and install these fonts on your computer. There are plenty of effects,and thousands of colors. It's extremely user friendly.  Learning curve is short as well: when you open the homepage, you will see sample designs that you can choose as your "base", and then you can change everything and anything: colors, letters, text size.
