Knox County is ready to administer the FluMist to school children
Yes, folks, it's that time of year when we get ready to battle the dreaded flu. And so, just like previous years, Knox County is getting ready to administer the FluMist to school children.
 
However, this year we have some snags, and the County Health Department is asking for help. In past years, the County Health Department got enough funding to cover the cost of the vaccine. This year, because some federal funding has ended, they don't have the funds to cover the vaccine.
 
Parents are asked to provide insurance information on the consent forms. (Every Knox County child must have a consent form in order to be vaccinated at school.) The Knox County Health Department will handle the rest, said John Lott, KCHD director of clinical services, and parents won't be charged for anything.
The Health Department also has asked for donations to help it keep offering the program, which has been a model for other places in the country. It's partnered with Metropolitan Drug Commission, and the public can donate money at either organization's web site: http://www.knoxcounty.org/health or www.metrodrug.org/web/flumist.
