It's not Door County without an authentic Door County Fish Boil!
You can't visit Door County and not try our native favorite, the Door County Fish Boil.  Sound unappetizing?  It's not, it's delicious!  Fresh, locally caught whitefish is cut into chunks (ask for a tail section, it has the least bones) and boiled in salt water.  Later, red potatoes and finally, baby onions are added.  They all boil together separately (it's not a stew) and are lifted out after the dramatic "boil over", when the flames are raised to allow the pot to boil over and wash off any fish oils or other impurities.  The fish, potatoes and onions are then served with cole slaw, rye bread and authentic Door County cherry pie.  This is a historic event that dates back to commercial ice fishing days in the 1930s.  It has evolved into an event savored as much for the food as for the drama.
There are some excellent places to enjoy fish boils in Door County.  However, tonight 12/29/12 the nonprofit Door County Commercial Fisherman Association is hosting a holiday boil at the Sister Bay Fire Station on Mill Road.  The dinner will help to raise awareness and help the industry through ever-changing state and federal regulations, as well as educate on ... more
