Maui is an undisputedly beautiful part of Hawaii with unmatchable instances of astounding nature. 1. A popular legend about the island involves a story about a demigod named Maui. Legend says that the island is shaped to resemble Maui’s head and body. The legend also says that Maui pulled the Hawaiian Islands from the sea and lassoed the sun on Haleakala, a mountain to the east of the island.
2. Maui is the second largest Hawaiian island. Its nickname is Valley Isle. Each Hawaiian island has their own nickname; Maui received the title of “Valley Isle” because the island sits between two mountains.
3. There are no active volcanoes on Maui. However, Haleakala (the mountain to the east of Maui) is due to erupt soon, with its last eruption occurring sometime during the 1700s.
