Merrick, Long Island - I love where I live
 

Buyers tend to come to Merrick as young, married couples and stay a lifetime! They put down roots, start a family and become a vital part of the community. When their children grow up, they may leave temporarily to attend school and pursue job opportunities but, more often than not,  once they  marry, the children return once more to begin a new generation of homeowners.
 
Merrick has that small town feel. It is named after the Meroke Indian tribe, the earliest residents of this region. The name is said to mean "peaceful." In the mid-1600's, settlers came from England looking for a better way of life and freedom of religion. Agriculture was their chief occupation.
 
The first large scale real estate development in Merrick were the "Gables" built south of Sunrise Highway. They were built by Joseph Frankel and William Fox, owner of Fox Film Corp which later became known as Twentieth Century Fox. Errol Flynn and Ed Begley, Sr as well as Jr., are the most recognizable homeowners of that era.

 
In the summer of 2010, the HBO Miniseries "Mildred Pierce" was filmed at the Merrick Gables. The Civic Association supported this endeavor as a chance to publicize this lovely community. Kate Winslet and Melissa Leo ... more
