Whale Tails on Route 89 in Vermont
'Reverence' statue depiction of two whale's tails diving into a sea of grass made from 36 tons of African black granite standing 13 feet tall. The statues are located on Interstate 89 between exits 12 - 13 in Vermont.


Fossils of whales have been found in the Champlain Valley in New England's only landlocked state. The last glacier melted away 12,500 years ago and the sea poured in. 10,000 years ago, the Champlain Valley rose above sea level and the waters drained into the St. Lawrence River in Canada connecting the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean. In 1849, remains of a beluga whale were found in Charlotte .Twenty remains of beluga whales have since been found in Vermont.
