In the mid-1800’s Captain Charles Weber acquired part a Mexican land grant delivered by Governor Micheltorena to his business partner, Guillermo (William) Gulnac.  After his partner’s failure to settle the tract, Weber established the settlement of Tuleberg in 1847, renaming it in 1849 to Stockton after Commodore Robert F Stockton, likely in response to the political circumstances surrounding the Mexican-American war as well as Weber’s intended land grant claim.  There is no limit to the intrigue of Stockton’s early political history, but it remains considered to be the first California communities without a Spanish or Indian name precedent.  At the head waters of the San Joaquin River, Stockton became the site of much of the supply movement from the Bay Area to the gold fields.  Today, Stockton is the 13th largest city in California and the 63rd largest city in the United States.
