Ann Smith
Ann Smith was born in Boston, Massachusetts back in 1696. History has lost who her parents were, where she went to school and all the other interesting facts I write about. However, they are not in play for the rest of the story.
She married James around 1723, the union produced 5 children of which 4 survived to adulthood. James died after a long illness in 1735 leaving Ann a widow with 4 children to support. What she did after his death will forever place her in the history books.
In 1736, she petitioned the General Assembly of Rhode Island to let her practice her trade which was granted, a position she held until her death in 1763 when she was 66 years young.
What you may not know about Ann Smith Franklin is her husband James was the brother-in-law of Benjamin Franklin. She was the first female newspaper editor in the colonies. The first woman to write an almanac and the first woman inducted into the University of Rhode Island’s Journalism Hall of Fame.
Until tomorrow keep those pearly showing, it may just make someone’s day
