Claude Schaeffer
Claude Schaeffer was born in Shamokin, Pennsylvania back in 1894. In 1921, he received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins. In 1924, you could find him at the Case Western Reserve University working as a surgical resident. He stayed there until his death in 1971. In the 1930’s his mission was the problem of how to restore circulation to the heart.
To that end he developed a technique where he implanted some pectoral muscle to the heart sack, that provided an additional source of circulation. However, that paled to what he did in 1947.
What you may not know about Claude Schaeffer Beck is that in 1947, he performed the first defibrillation on a 14-year-old boy with a congenital disorder. The boy (unknown who he was) made a full recovery. The defibrillator had been designed by him and built by his friend James Rand of the Rand Development Corporation.
