Enjoy Hawaiian Slack Key Music at the 28th Annual Ki Hoalu Guitar Festival
Music on the islands is a huge part of the culture here and is simply a way of life in Hawaii. Whether it’s drumming, singing, or dancing, celebrating music is one of the many ways people on the islands like to enjoy themselves. And now you can too with a special event that celebrates one of Hawaii’s most beloved arts- the slack key guitar.
This summer, on Sunday, June 23rd from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m., there will be a slack key guitar festival at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center titled Ki Ho’alu. Ki Ho’alu translates to “loosen the key” in Hawaiian and this year marks the 28th year of the festival. This particular style of music dates back to the 19th-century paniolo (cowboy) era, when slack key guitar style was played around a campfire after a day of manual labor on the farm. It quickly began a tradition on the island that is still practiced and loved by many today. This style of music has grown in popularity and recognition worldwide and is even given its own category at the Grammy Music Awards!
