James Calhoun
James Calhoun was born in Cincinnati, Ohio back in 1845. At the start of the American Civil War he was in Europe, when he returned two years later he joined the Union Army. By the end of the war he had been promoted to Sergeant. In 1867, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the infantry, where he met Margaret in 1870. The couple was married shortly thereafter.
During the Battle of the Little Bighorn in Montana he was acting as temporary commander of L Company. Of course, all of you know the outcome of the battle. His second in command Lt. John Crittenden whose body was found only a few feet from his while defending a hill. Both of their bodies are interred in Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
What you may not know about James Calhoun is that his wife was Margaret Custer, which of course made him the brother-in-law to George Armstrong Custer.
