Stop and Smell the Roses June 12 is Red Rose Day
"A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet..."
the great poet Shakespeare wrote.
Yet it's difficult to imagine the scent of a sworn (and inherently stinky) enemy would ever smell as sweet as a freshly fragrant red rose.
Shakespeare's line is from Romeo and Juliet, the famous play about star-crossed lovers who have the misfortune to love ones from the houses of their enemies.
Juliet (a Capulet) loves Romeo (a Montague); the houses of Capulet and Montague are sworn and eternally feuding families. (Think along the lines of Hatfields and McCoys or Bloods and Crips.) Montague being "the wrong sort" is what Shakespeare referred to by this line.
June 12 is Red Rose Day, which makes it a wonderful excuse to "Stop and Smell the Roses" today.
