Resolve: a backlink a day for 2020!
When I first designed my web with MS FrontPage a few years back, there were few sources online to explain how SEO worked best.  For those owning websites that are your principle contact to a public that is searching for your services, backlinks are crucial to your success.
I read that 'reciprocal linking' was the way to do things initially, especially if you were brand new online.  This entailed contacting others in similar related industries to offer a link from your resource page to theirs, and vice versa.
This worked great and I found several real estate webs that offered a link back if I featured their logo even.  This method does raise your value to the main search engines, and you will rise in SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages).
Fast forward and now you rarely hear of this easy way to get "noticed" online.  
A more authoritative link back is from an article you have written or a mention from a regarded web or blog.  The higher the value the source is to the SEs algorithms, the higher you will place in SERPs for your search terms.
