Carlsbad Real Estate - Buying a Loft: Make Sure It's What You Want
There seems to be a certain cache about lofts these days, and they are gaining in popularity out here in the Carlsbad real estate market and in other So Cal communities, especially urban areas.
Having come from the Northeast, I was used to the idea of lofts, which have been around for a while. Lofts there are generally converted industrial buildings of one sort of another - manufacturing facilities, mills, factories, etc. - and they were usually in fairly urban settings.
Open spaces (no doors or even walls), high ceilings, exposed pipes, beams and brick, and large windows are typical. As they grew more popular, builders began to build new buildings in a loft-style, although they never quite capture the feeling of a true urban loft. 
Lofts are getting popular here now. Work-Live lofts are becoming commonplace as part of the New Urbanism movement, and a convenient way for folks to combine working and living space, and save commuting time (and carbon footprints).
