las cruces activities: Two Great Las Cruces Parks - 08/03/11 07:50 AM
Every community needs a great park. Luckily Las Cruces has several. My grandchildren have lots of energy, and it's great to take them to the park sometimes to let them run around and play. Our favorites parks to visit are Young Park and Apodaca Park.

Young Park is a 21.6 acre facility in Central Las Cruces, NM. It is located in the middle of a medium density residential subdivision with some commercial areas located across the park's east parking lot.

las cruces activities: Bataan Memorial Death March - 03/21/11 04:24 AM
On March 27th the southern New Mexico community will unite, once again, to pay homage to the World War II heroes who sufferred through the Bataan Death March.
The Bataan Memorial Death March is a challenging march through the high desert terrain of White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, conducted in honor of the heroic service members who defended the Philippine Islands during World War II, sacrificing their freedom, health and, in many cases, their very lives. These brave soldiers were responsible for the defense of the islands of Luzon, Corregidor and the harbor defense forts of the Philippines.
On April … (3 comments)

las cruces activities: St. Patrick's Day in Las Cruces - 03/17/11 04:06 AM

If you're looking for a fun and unique way to celebrate this Irish holiday, visit the Rio Grande Theatre where Irish fiddler Paddy Jones will perform.
Jones is a traditional Kerry style fiddler from Country Kerry. He studdied under Sliabh Luchara fiddlers and is a living connection to Ireland's past when music and books were the center of culture.
The combination of spiritual quest / fiddling quest is what makes him such a compelling storyteller and fiddler. His only source of income for the last decade is his summer gigs and his once-a-week teaching schedule.
Jones is a highly sought-after … (0 comments)

las cruces activities: The Las Cruces Renaissance ArtsFaire - 11/15/10 02:50 AM
Every year I get my dose of bagpipes, flutes, and the Merry Court of Sherwood Oak at the annual Renaissance Arts Faire. If you missed it, mark your 2011 calendar now for the first weekend in November.
Since 1971 the Las Cruces community gathers to celebrate the Renaissance. This year's Renaissance Arts Faire was no exception. Over 30,000 crowded into Young Park for great food, arts & crafts, and entertainment. We are very lucky to have this great event year after year. Here are some photos from this year's event.
Most people probably never think about the organization behind the Renaissance Faire, … (0 comments)

las cruces activities: Fall is for Families and Mazes - 10/23/10 04:04 AM
Las Cruces gets so many retirement recognitions that families probably feel a little left out. The truth is that if you are raising a young family, there may not be a better place to raise it than in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
This is where I could start listing all the recognitions that address safety, like the Farmers Insurance study from 2009 that says Las Cruces is one of the safest cities of it's size, but I won't do that. If you are interested in studies on safety I am sure you can easily find reports that cover Las Cruces (if … (0 comments)

las cruces activities: An Easy Way for You to Stay Healthy in Las Cruces - 10/06/10 03:34 AM
As a growing retirement community, Las Cruces has recognized a need to focus on health care. Over the last decade our health care community has grown significantly along with the community's commitment to preventative health care.
Preventative health care could be the most cost effective way for a community to address its long term health care needs. In the city of Las Cruces we have put the primary focus on one thing.
Walking
It's pretty easy to stay healthy. In Las Cruces you have a community committed to giving you fresh places to walk.
The City of Las Cruces is a … (0 comments)

las cruces activities: Raft the Rio - 06/13/10 04:44 PM
Around 200 rafts/interesting hulls participated in theSouthwest Environmental Center’s (SWEC) 13th annual Raft the Rio event on Saturday, June 12th. And more than a 1,000 people attended to cheer on their favorite pirate crew or outlaws, as they floated down the Rio Grande River.
Raft the Rio started at La Llorona Park, beneath the Picacho Street Bridge, to the Calle del Norte (Mesilla) Bridge.
A rockin’ festival of local bands (Mick Harris, Drunk Armstrong, Robyn Rivas BBR Band, and the New World Drummers) and delicious local restaurants, such as Andele’s (heavenly green chile enchiladas!) and the Rib Cage (I love their pork ribs!), … (3 comments)

Kept under tight raps for months Steinborn GMAC Real Estate finally announced that affiliation with GMAC has come to an end, and they are now an independent office under the new name Steinborn & Associates Real Estate. The big announcement was made Tuesday at the Rio Grande Theater.
The company hasn’t wasted any time changing the name and looks of their webpage, as the new look is already reflected there, and plans to start changing its For Sale signs across the city.
This final decision has been in the works for months, as Steinborn owner/broker John Hummer explained how GMAC Bank … (0 comments)

This year’s festival will be showing a record 53 films over four days at Cineport 10 located on the southwest end of the Mesilla Valley Mall (700 S. Telshor). las cruces activities: An Easter Sunday Outing - 04/07/10 02:53 AM
Last Sunday my family and I decided to take the dogs and the grand kids out for a little Easter Sunday outing, so we decided to go to Soledad Canyon. Soledad Canyon is a nice little spot just west of the Organ Mountains where a lot of people go to hike, mountain biking, horseback riding, or to simply soak-up some nature. We parked at the Soledad Canyon Day Use Area and started our hike. About 200 yards in we reached a fork in the road, which forced us to choose whether or not we wanted to go left or right. We … (3 comments)

las cruces activities: American Indian Week 2010 - 03/31/10 02:29 AM
Since Las Cruces and surrounding communities are so rich with American Indian culture, it only makes sense that crafts, dances, and music should kick-off American Indian Week starting on Monday. As part of American Indian Month, NMSU’s American Indian Program makes it a point to really celebrate the traditions and culture of all New Mexico’s American Indian Nations.

Cultural events ranging from art exhibits, demonstrations, and dance performances to a Parade of Nations and Miss Native American NMSU Pageant all begin Monday, April 5, and end Saturday, April 10. Two-time Grammy winner, Robert Mirabal, will be performing on April 8 … (1 comments)

las cruces activities: Veterans, soldiers, and civilians get ready for the 21st Annual Bataan Memorial March - 03/21/10 01:15 PM

On March 21, 2010, the 21st annual Bataan Memorial Death March will take place on the White Sands Missile Range. The somber sounds of bagpipes mix in curiously with the accompanying sounds of the early morning dawn as participants of the Bataan Memorial Death March begin to slowly lineup for the day’s race…
What started back in 1989 by the Army ROTC Department at New Mexico State University and is now held every year in the desert terrain of White Sands Missile Range, N.M., the Bataan Memorial Death March honors the heroic service members who defended the Philippine Islands during World … (0 comments)

las cruces activities: Cowboy Days,Las Cruces Farm & Ranch Museum March 13 -14 - 03/13/10 04:44 AM
As I stop to take a look at our amazing organ mountains, I know that whoever coined the saying "ride ‘em cowboy" undoubtedly came from our very own southwestern history; the same history that is being celebrated this weekend at an annual event known as "Cowboy Days". This is the 12th annual celebration of our heritage and promises to be the best ever.
One of the reasons why this event interests me specifically, is because, as a real estate agent, I've found that these kinds of events tie together not just individual families, but entire communities. They really play a vital … (0 comments)

las cruces activities: This Weekend In Las Cruces - February 19th - 02/19/10 09:23 AM

There’s a lot going on around town this weekend here in Las Cruces, and in our efforts to keep you up-to-date with the latest community news and events, we compiled all the newest, biggest, and latest events into one blog post. First things first, we dutifully researched our ongoing project, The Search for the Perfect Margarita, and headed out to The Game Bar & Grill to try their two most popular adult beverages. The Midori and Pomegranate Margaritas were recommended to us by our server, and of the two, the pomegranate was most certainly the better drink all around. The … (0 comments)

las cruces activities: Where is the Most Beautiful Place in Las Cruces? - 02/17/10 01:41 PM

Well, beauty is certainly in the eye of the beholder, but this Monday, we went hiking at the Dripping Springs trail just 15 minutes outside of town and I can tell you that this oasis is certainly in the running. There was not a cloud in the sky at 10AM as we cruised down Highway 70, windows down and hair flying. The temperature was a fair 60F, and the direct rays of the sun on my skin gave me the taste of the beautiful spring to come. The birds were singing, the bugs had come out of hiding, and there … (2 comments)

las cruces activities: Valentine’s Weekend in LC: Margaritas, Warhol, Jazz, & More - 02/12/10 11:01 AM

Above: The Cucumber Margarita at De La Vegas.
As promised, the Evelyn Bruder Dream Team has been diligently working hard to find the perfect margarita in Las Cruces. The scoop this week is a specialty margarita at De La Vegas Restaurant, the newest addition to locally owned eateries in our city. A higher-end ‘pecan grill’ and bar, De La Vegas blends two of southwest New Mexico’s biggest exports, parlaying it into an entire menu more or less. Pecans and green chile are a-plenty at this Napa Valley-esque restaurant, used in everything from the butter to the pecan-and-bacon-chocolate dinner mints (no, … (0 comments)
