WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Federal Reserve unexpectedly slashed a key interest rate -- the Fed Funds Rate -- by a bold three-fourths of a percentage point on Tuesday, responding to a global plunge in stock markets that heightened concerns about a recession. The Fed signaled that further rate cuts were likely. A letter was sent to the editor of the New York Sun newspaper from an 8-year-old named Virginia O'Hanlon, the only child of a New York City Coroner's Assistant, questioning the existence of Santa Claus. Francis Pharcellus Church, who wrote for the newspaper, replied to Virginia and his editorial became a piece of Christmas lore. Did you know that Dr. Clement Clarke Moore, who wrote, "A Visit from St. Nicholas," which, today, we refer to as "'Twas the Night Before Christmas," was the author of a Hebrew dictionary and for more than 20 years, would not acknowledge he was the author of the famous Christmas poem? Moore was Bible scholar from a wealthy family in New York and taught at Columbia College.
