coon rapids: Main St to open, Main St to close - 07/14/11 03:55 PM
Anoka County does it again, they win the three legged milk stool award for the Main St project in Coon Rapids. Over a year to upgrade a mile of roadway from 2 to 4 lanes. They accomplished this by starting on the quickest part of the project first, then moving on to the portion that would take the most time to complete. I am hoping this opens up in the next few days as people have been using the Oaks of Shenandoah neighborhood I live in as a detour. This part that was closed is from Coon Creek Blvd to Hanson.

coon rapids: New light by the Sherriff's Office - 12/09/10 11:43 AM
They have been working on it for a few months now but, today they turned on the light at Hanson and 133rd. This intersection definitely needed a light as people turn left there from every direction. At times there could several cars there waiting to turn left from every possible angle. You reall had to think through what each car would do as they moved through the intersection and then decide if you could proceed safely. Between the addition of the new Sherriff's office and the new entry into Wedgewood neighborhood, the traffic count was very high. Plus on those fall … (0 comments)

coon rapids: Snow down, slow down - 11/13/10 09:36 AM
Well, our first snow of the year started last night and is still coming down with over a foot here in Coon Rapids. I drove over to a client's home on their first day in it to snap a few photos. On the way I saw several cars in the ditch and a head on collision on Coon Creek Blvd. I would gues the slippery conditons not only caused it but saved further injuries by allowing the cars to slide freely after impact. Although the crash was on a curve, the curve is not hard to handle in most conditions. But … (0 comments)

coon rapids: Main St Closing soon! - 06/09/10 08:30 AM
The second season in Minnesota is in full swing and about to get worse. That is right, road construction is the other season besides winter in Minnesota. The next big project starts Monday when Main St closes in Coon Rapids from Coon Creek drive to Hanson Blvd. They are going to widen the road to a 4 lane divided highway.
So why do they need to close the road? Well the sod fields that the road crosses west of Hanson is basically a peat bog. Peat makes a lousy road base as we have witnessed over the years. They have filled … (1 comments)

coon rapids: New BBQ joint in Coon Rapids - 05/26/10 07:58 AM
My wife called and said a coworker of hers was the first customer of Dickey's Barbecue Pit on Round Lake Blvd in Coon Rapids. He received a coupon for a free sandwich and gave it to her. She asked if I wanted to take her out for lunch and off we went.
We were greated by Troy the store owner who opened the door for us as we approached. As we went in to order the national spokesman for Dickey's told us all about their sandwiches and other menu items. The server recomended the chopped beef sandwich so we tried that … (0 comments)

coon rapids: Awesome renovation in Coon Rapids - 04/08/10 11:32 AM
I have truly enjoyed watching this home go from foreclosure sale to a very nice place to call home. This all started with a couple who wanted to help the economy. Their idea was simple, we have resources, some skills and a vision to help those under employed friends. They started by picking a Realtor who was just getting started on a full time basis due to a recent lay off from Sun Microsystems. From there we looked at several homes and a few bids. We ended up purchasing a home in Coon Rapids on Kumquat street.
The city already had … (0 comments)

coon rapids: First spring bike ride! - 03/07/10 11:43 AM
The temp hit 50* and the sun was shining. Time to clean off the bikes and pump up the tires. The trails still have some snow and ice on them so we hit the streets. We decided that the Coon Rapids Dam would make a nice first ride and headed south on Shenandoah Blvd to Hanson. Hanson was a little dicey as the cars weren't expecting bikes quite yet.
Once we got to the dam we looked out over the river. As we were enjoying the mirror like appearance of the river up stream, a glanced back to the east and … (1 comments)

coon rapids: Coon Rapids Olive Garden - 11/30/09 01:21 PM
The girls both did very well on their report cards so tradition says it is time to go out to eat! They love Italian and to no surprise they chose Olive Garden in Coon Rapids. We have been there several times in the past and always love the food. This time however was the first time all 5 of us ordered full entre's. The days of $8-10 meals and or kids meals are now officially over.
Anyway, we were seated promptly, mostly because it was 2 pm on Sunday but that was our choice. The endless salad and bread sticks usually … (0 comments)

coon rapids: Highway 10 bottleneck gone! - 11/02/09 06:42 AM
The so called redneck bottleneck will be no more after today! The construction on Highway 10 in Coon Rapids should finish up this week. The project extended the 3rd lane from Foley to Hanson Blvd. with the west bound lane becoming the Hanson exit only lane. On the eastbound side the third lane starts as Hanson traffic enters the freeway. The redneck bottleneck was formed when Highway was completed through Blaine. This allowed 3 lanes from 10, 2 lanes from Highway 47 and one lane from the 610 bridge to combine into 2 lanes in about one mile.
The bridge replacement … (0 comments)

coon rapids: A great loss for Coon Rapids - 03/01/09 12:02 PM
Coon Rapids lost an icon during the last week. Have you heard of her before? If you have ever been to Crooked Lake Park or even the beach years ago, you most likely know to whom this story is about. The little store that almost goes unnoticed as you play at the park or drive by on your way home. The road that passes by once was a busy county road, now only the local traffic passes by. If you ventured in this 15 x 15 foot store you could quickly find what ever it was you wanted. If you brought … (1 comments)

coon rapids: Coon Rapids Dam - 02/07/09 10:39 AM
We just went for a walk at the Coon Rapids Dam. It is one of the hidden gems in Anoka County. We typically ride our bikes down there several times a year but, it is a tad cold and icy for that right now. So we drove down to the park and hiked out across the dam. Their is some great ice formations and ice bergs floating on the river below the dam. We also saw a red tailed hawk and several deer, one had even ventured out onto the ice. I snapped a few photos for your enjoyment. I highly … (0 comments)

coon rapids: Finally widening 242 - 12/11/08 01:54 PM
I just went over to the Coon Rapids City Center to hear about the plans to widen Highway 242, now known as County 14 and Main Street. The road will be upgraded to 4 lanes from Coon Creek to Crane Street, which is just past Hanson. The construction will start in 2010 and likely close down the road from Hanson to Shenandoah Blvd to clear out the peat bog or build a land bridge. The county engineer said there is around 5 feet of tar from all of the fill down over the years in the area by the sod fields.

coon rapids: Hanson is finally done! - 10/31/08 09:39 AM
Wow, the 3 legged milk stool award goes to the Hanson Blvd construction team. The project was originally slated to start last spring and be done not long after the bridge over 10 was done. That project was done by July 07 but the Hanson Blvd road widening project hadn't even started yet. After enduring 6 months of Hanson being closed last year we thought the end was near. No such luck however as the intersections with County 14 (242) and Bunker had yet to be started.
I have watched a lot of construction projects over the years and you can … (0 comments)

coon rapids: Fall Colors In Coon Rapids - 10/18/08 12:23 PM
The fall colors were spectacular this year in Coon Rapids. I added a few pictures below to show you some of what I saw on our walk today through Bunker Hills Regional Park and the Oaks of Shenandoah. We walked through the new tunnel under Hanson Blvd and over to the new tunnel under the railroad tracks and through the golf course. They still have it closed at the tracks but we walked on around anyway. The trail map is below the pictures.

coon rapids: Constance Softball Playoffs - 08/04/08 02:10 PM
Well it was a great season guys! 11-1 and tied for first place, we even received t-shirts. Family of Christ Red ended our season early with 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th to win the game. Our bats were a little flat as we only scored 7 times. Steve Stelly was kind enough to set up a picinic dinner afterwards and we enjoyed hot dogs and burgers.
Go Constance!

coon rapids: Redneck bottleneck moves West - 08/01/08 08:25 AM
If you drive through Coon Rapids during rush hour you will be glad to read this note. Highway 10 from Egret to Hanson Blvd will be upgraded to 6 lanes next year. MnDOT plans to spend $10 million to move the redneck bottleneck west 3 miles, potentially eliminating the jam completely for afternoon and morning commuters. Construction will start next April and continue until November when the new lanes will open. The largest expense in the project will be replacing the bridges over the railroad tracks.
Currently, Highway 10 goes from 3 lanes to 2 right after 610 and 47 join … (1 comments)

coon rapids: State tourney time - 07/27/08 05:40 AM
The Minnesota state men's softball tourney was held at Taft park in Richfield this weekend and Constance Free was there to compete. We eliminated 2 teams from the toruney and beat one other team on our way to a 3-2 finish. Lossing our 2nd game 10-7 made our road to the championship daunting as we then needed to win 7 straight games to claim the prize. We won our first game this morning even after spotting the other team 6 runs in the first inning. We then went on to shut them down and scored 11 runs. The next team just … (0 comments)

coon rapids: 11-1 may not be good enough - 07/25/08 02:29 PM
Well we finished our regular season tonight with a 9-0 win against Total Chaos. We started and ended our season with our only 2 shutouts of the year. Jim Blair turned 2 double plays and the rest of the team played great defense. If Epiphany wins though, they will be league champs with the 3 way tie with Cross of Christ. Tommie Casey broke out of a little slump with an in the park home run.
Our State tourney starts tomorrow in Richfield at Taft Park field #1 11:20 am. Stop by and enjoy the competition.
Great season guys!
