(Almost) Wordless Wednesday...Finally, A Bit Of Color Around The Yard
With the Spring we've had here on the Seacoast, you could mistake the white in this photo for snow. Turns out, its only time for the Hawthorne trees to begin dropping its snow white flowery petals. The lilacs are now in full bloom and the yard is filled with their amazing scent. For brilliant color, its hard to beat an azalea. Some Bleeding Heart hiding under a rhododendron. Don't forget to sprinkle in a little lily of the valley here and there, or a vinca, or maybe even a wisteria. Add … (24 comments)

nh: Sandy Neck in Barnstable MA...Where Time Didn't Stop, But Sure Slowed Down - 05/22/11 04:15 AM
Sandy Neck in Barnstable MA...Where Time Didn't Stop, But Sure Slowed DownAmong my very earliest childhood recollections were summer vacations with my family at our camp on Sandy Neck in Barnstable MA on Cape Cod. Probably most of you recognize Cape Cod as the arm-like extension of the southeastern portion of Massachusetts that forms Cape Cod Bay.
Sandy Neck in Barnstable MA is an unusual sandy peninsula created by wave action about 4,000 years ago and forms an important barrier system that protects Barnstable Harbor and the marsh ecosystems. Sandy Neck is a little over six miles long and in … (26 comments)

If You Can Guess What This Is ... You Win!
I suppose this is not really a contest in the "Wow, I just won a contest" sense, because there are no prizes, trips or giveaways, but you will definitely be able to tell your friends and family that you guessed the purpose of a strange looking thing in a photo and no one can ever take that away.
WE HAVE A WINNER!
Congratulations to Robert Rauf for getting real darn close. The exact use of this medieval looking device is to drive a well point to a desired depth...by hand.

A Glimpse Into Fuller Gardens in North Hampton NH - Part One
One of my favorite places to visit on the Seacoast is Fuller Gardens in North Hampton NH. Located at 10 Willow Avenue off scenic Route 1A (Ocean Boulevard), Fuller Gardens in North Hampton NH is the ornamental garden Massachusetts Governor Alvan T. Fuller created for his wife, Viola, at their summer estate, Runnymede-by-the-Sea. This 2 1/2 acre property is a true turn-of-the-century  estate garden. Although Runnymede was dismantled in 1961 per the wishes of Alvan, the ornamental gardens remain. Fuller commissioned the design and construction of these famous ornamental … (9 comments)

Many Hands Make Light Work
You've probably heard this expression a gazillion times, but did you know where it came from? This quote has been attributed to English playwright and poet, John Heywood who lived from 1497 to 1580. His message was clear. If you have enough people helping out on a project, a great deal of work can be accomplished in a short period of time. This was our premise when we asked for volunteers at our last business meeting. The landscaping and planting beds around our office had taken a beating this past winter and the weeds had taken … (18 comments)

In Honor of the Royal Wedding...She Dressed in Her Finest White Gown
She had been patiently waiting for the invitation to the Royal Wedding, but it never came. Undaunted, and of course not wanting to show the slightest disrespect, she donned her finest snow white gown anyway to celebrate William and Kate's special day tomorrow. At some point, of course, I'm sure they will realize the oversight and offer very proper and profuse apologies, so I'll probably send them a photo of her in all of her snow white splendor. We wish them the best and hope for a … (18 comments)

nh: (Almost) Wordless Wednesday - First Attempt at Spring in Seacoast NH - 04/20/11 10:31 AM
Here in the Seacoast, this year the temperatures have struggled to get to, well, you know, Springlike. Since Monday, the thermometer has been locked on 42 degress and the sky has been steel gray and drizzling. But this past Sunday was a bit different, almost encouraging me to take the camera out back and see what I could find.If you would like to know why I chose Seacoast New Hampshire to make my home, click here to email me, and I can make a real convincing argument for you to choose it too! Or, if you would like to do your … (28 comments)

Sagamore Hampton Golf Club And Sagamore Golf Center In North Hampton NH
I started out to write a post about how lucky we are in Seacoast New Hampshire to have not only an award winning 18 hole public Daily Fee Golf Course, but also an equally award winning Golf Center right here in North Hampton, NH. But then, I changed my mind and I'll get around to that later. Of course it would have been easy to write about scenic Sagamore Hampton Golf Club, located at 101 North Road, North Hampton, NH, how it opened in 1962 and was awarded Golf … (9 comments)

The Angel Trumpets Are Coming Back!
Brugmansia, commonly known as the Angel Trumpet is a member of the Nightshade family. Nightshades grow all over the world and include some very famous varieties such as Datura (Jimson Weed), Mandragora (Mandrake), Solanum (Potato & Tomato), Nicotiana (Tobacco) and Petunia (Petunia). Perhaps the most well known member, from Greek mythology is Belladonna. Most of these plants produce alkaloids that are quite toxic to humans.
Four years ago we became the proud owners of three brugmansias suaveolens or Angel Trumpets. These three are container plants which we place outside after any danger of frost and … (19 comments)

Lago's Lone Oak Ice Cream...A Sure Sign of Spring In Seacoast NH
As we come out of one of the toughest winters in recent history here in New England, we are all anxiously awaiting those first signs of Spring. This past Winter brought us over 70" of snow with some 80 roof collapses of homes and businesses here in the Northeast. Along with the snow, we had unrelenting cold temperatures without the slightest hint of our characteristic "January thaw." There is no doubt we are ready to put Winter 2010 - 2011 in our rear view and move on to … (24 comments)

The Month of March ... Celebrating the Inner Irish in All of Us - The Epilogue
I was in a wee bit of quandary as to what to call this piece. I considered "footnote," "post script," and "epilogue," but decided on Epilogue because it comes first in the alphabet. Makes sense to me.
It is now real time and the story of the trip to return Mary's ashes to her birthplace in Drumshanbo, in County Leitrim Ireland, was completed in the Final Chapter 16. I suggest you click here to catch up on the Complete Series before reading this one. However, … (28 comments)
