key west: Key West Real Estate Throwback Thursday No 43 - 03/17/22 02:41 AM
from March 17, 2009
614 Greene Street - Old Town - Key West
They've already started the party without you folks. I just went down to take a photo of 614 Greene Street and the area is a bustle of activity with people wearing O'the green. How appropriate they are doing it on Greene Street. If you think I jest, look at the photo above with the couple in green t-shirts that read "St. Patrick's Day 2009".
Anyway, St. Patrick's Day or someday soon may be your lucky day if you were to buy 614 Greene Street which is located at the epicenter of … (4 comments)

key west: Key West Real Estate Throwback Thursday No. 41 - 03/03/22 04:36 AM
from January 16, 2014
3529  Sunrise Drive,  Key West, Florida
Matthew Broderick and Tom Cruise were born in 1963.  3529 Sunrise Drive in Key West Florida was built in 1963.  Each will become 51 years old in 2014.  The two movie stars take good care of themselves and probably look better than a lot of people their age.  Men and women who workout and take care of their bodies, skin, and hair normally look better than those who don't.
A lot of my buyers are in their fifties. Many probably grew up in a house built in the 1960s when contemporary design was the … (5 comments)

key west: Southernmost Buoy Set Afire - 01/02/22 10:02 AM

The Southernmost Buoy was damaged by an intentional fire set by two bros taking selfies. Be on the lookout. The police have clear video of them in the act. They might get a fair trial in Jacksonville or Panama City. Might. Doubtful in Key West.

It will be repaired. It will come back.

key west: Taco Tuesday - The Value of Location - 04/12/21 01:27 AM

Last week while photographing some ongoing construction for my blog I suddenly got a whiff of garlic. It wasn't totally am unpleasant smell but not the kind of smell I normally encounter in Old Town. A few days earlier I picked up my completed federal income tax returns from my accountant. His office is  located on North Roosevelt Blvd in one of our shopping netters. As soon as I opened the door I got a whiff of the Subway Sandwich shop located next door. The smell made me think of food. It was both pleasant ad distracting. I commented on it … (4 comments)

key west: The Pie Hole - 04/03/21 05:21 AM

I often write about the charm of living on one of the slow lanes in Key West where there are cute little cottages, little to no traffic, and peaceful surroundings as contrasted to the hullabaloo associated with Duval Street. There are a few streets which provide the same type of serene environment including the one shown above. It's not just the lanes and streets that makes life in Key West so appealing, it is the way we live. A lot of us came here from somewhere else to find a better life. To be accepted. To be less judgmental of others. … (15 comments)

key west: The One That Got Away - 03/17/21 03:58 AM

Obviously those trout didn't get away. Late afternoon this past Valentines Day a duplex located in the Case Marina Area was listed for sale at what I thought was a bargain price. I quickly drove over and took a couple of exterior shots and then contacted the listing agent to ask permission to write about the new listing. She asked me not to blog because one of tenants was giving her grief. So I didn't. I did send the listing to some active buyers who considered the property. The structure sat on a 5,300 Sq Ft lot which made it very … (3 comments)

key west: The Many Woes of Dunkin Dave - 01/21/21 02:31 AM

I met Dunkin Dave at Club Body Tech in the Duval Square center perhaps twenty years ago. We would often speak to each other during our early morning workouts. He was a very personable guy, very  outgoing, and super friendly to everybody. He almost always had a smile on his face and certainly all conversations started out on a high note.

He told me he owned the Dunkin Donuts franchise in Key West. The principal store was at the Overseas Market in the same building that now houses DOMINO'S PIZZA. I recall there was a second Dunkin Donuts at 502 Southard Street … (2 comments)

key west: Fantasy Fest 2020 Has Been Officially Cancelled - 07/09/20 01:49 PM

The Key West Citizen Newspaper just posted a special news alert that the 2020 Fantasy Fest Celebration, the Zombie Bike Ride, and the Key West Literary Seminar have been cancelled.

This is a sad day for the citizens and businesses in Key West. So many people love to participate in these events. Some work for months on their costumes and floats. The events historically raised money for Aids Help but in reality the ten day event gave a gigantic boost to the Key West economy.

The County Commission and the City of Key West took a big risk three months ago when they … (4 comments)

key west: Three Key West Love Stories - 02/14/20 03:48 AM

Long time readers know that I moved from Colorado to Key West more than a quarter century ago to own and operate a guest house then known as Eaton Lodge. The place had been boarded up for two years after being foreclosed by the US Small Business Administration.  We moved in a few days before Christmas and started to clean the place up. Locals stopped by and introduced themselves to us and welcomed us to Key West. They asked who we were and told us about themselves and the house - about Doctor Warren, the town doctor, and his wife, Genevieve … (6 comments)

key west: My Worst Thanksgiving - 11/22/18 02:41 AM

For as long as I can remember, I would watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade on TV. Over the years I decided it would be a real treat to actually see the parade in person. In 1998 a friend of a friend offered actual Macy's grand stand seats to me and my ex.This was going to be fun.

We stayed at a hotel on Central Park South. It was raining on Thanksgiving morning. I remember wearing jeans and a rain slicker. We both had umbrellas. We took a cab to near the Dakota. The grand stands were somewhere in that area as I … (4 comments)

key west: Key West, My MeToo Moment in Real Estate - 11/05/18 10:03 AM

Before you read, know this. I am a gay man and I am not a victim of anything. What I write really happened. It was a metoo moment when it occurred. Looking back more than twenty years later I consider what happened amusing, but it still should not have happened.
I first read about Key West in a magazine in 1979 way before the internet. I didn't actually visit Key West until 1984 but instantly fell in love with this magic island.
I worked with the same Realtor for several years before I actually bought a place in Key West. I made absurd … (5 comments)

key west: Key West - One Year After Hurricane Irma - 09/05/18 08:44 AM

Key West has been my home since December 1993. I have stayed in Key West for each of the hurricanes since Hurricane Georges in 1998 which recurred while I was in Ft Lauderdale attending a real estate refresher course. I remember the drive back to Key West on US 1 - a trip that normally take four hours took ten. I decided never do that again.

In late August 2018 CNN and other media started to warn the public about Hurricane Irma as it formed in the Atlantic.  The enormous storm moved at a terribly slow pace as it headed towards Cuba … (3 comments)

key west: The Thing I called "The Thing" that Appeared and Disappeard from Higgs Beach in Key West - 02/07/18 04:43 AM

My generation, the baby boomer generation, grew up fearing Russia and anything alien from outer space which I think was really about Russia - a society totally different than our own. One of the cult classics of that time was IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE.  I liked it so much I bought an 8mm five minute silent movie with subtitles.  When we don't understand something we fear it - well, most people do. Others go out and embrace it and figure out what makes it tick. Scientists and daredevils embrace the unknown.

Below are photos, most of which I took, but some … (6 comments)

key west: Key West 1989 - A Depiction of the Past - 12/29/17 01:32 AM

I found the above photo a week or so ago. It was taken in Key West in 1989.  I love this pic.  It depicts how much of Old Town looked nearly 30 years ago. (I invite readers who recognize the location to comment below. I will go over and photograph the location and update this blog.)

I would guess that more than seventy percent of the homes in Old Town have been totally renovated and that less than five percent look anything like the two above. The old wood telephone poles have been replaced by concrete poles which now include fast internet … (5 comments)

key west: Just Listed: 1233 South Street, Key West - 12/07/17 02:32 AM

Just Listed by yours truly, 1233 South Street in Key West, Florida.  I have had an interesting association with this property for the past few years. I wrote in my blog about the home that used to occupy the lot for generations. I refer to the former home in the past tense for a reason: the former home no longer exists. All that remains of the old structure is the foundation upon which a totally new house plus new master wing was built.

The new 1750 sq ft three bedroom 3 1/2 bath is sited on a large 6066 sq ft corner … (6 comments)

key west: Key West - The Accidental Bodybuilder - 10/04/17 03:11 AM

 The Accidental Bodybuilder

Several years ago I worked at a Key West real estate office with a young lady whose boyfriend was a house painter and a semi-professional bodybuilder. I remember meeting him for the first time:  the guy was massive. He had shocking red hair and a surprisingly tanned body. I guess when you work outside most of the day with your shirt off, you can get pretty tanned. Nobody could could overlook his amazing body. All people might not admire his physique,  but nobody could miss seeing it.
One of my favorite true stories about life in Key West involves this … (4 comments)
