Summer rentals are the lifeblood of the Outer Banks barrier islands-- the success of the shops, restaurants, tax base, real estate sales, tourist destinations, historic sites and museums are all dependent on how many visitors come and rent beach houses between May and September. With the slump in the real estate sales market and the national economic downturn, what's the forecast for 2009 summer beach rentals in the Outer Banks? People can reserve their favorite houses early with a small deposit; then in January, half of the rent is due for a confirmed reservation. I drove across the bridge with great anticipation-- leaving 8" of snow behind in Richmond, the Outer Banks barrier islands of North Carolina greeted me with sunshine and a stiff wind. These islands have welcomed visitors from Canada to Virginia for over a century, and are the birthplace of first flight. I could see signs of the yawning and stretching after a long cold winter's nap... new businesses, old ones getting spit and polish, landscapers working, wood sand fences, beach replenishment and newly constructed steps and decks.. fresh sidewalks and restaurant benches waiting to welcome vacationers.
