rock creek forest: This Summer, See Green Outside and Inside Your Chevy Chase Home - 06/10/11 03:23 AM
When considering how to save money on energy, homeowners usually think about their heating bills.  But there are energy savings to be had in the summer as well, if you know where to look. Consider these tips to reduce the warm weather energy bills of your Chevy Chase home.
Start with light bulbs. Changing from incandescent bulbs to Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs) will not only reduce energy use but also save money on bulbs, since CFL's last many times longer. Summer or winter, unplug your appliances. Even when not in use, plugged-in machines draw power and increase your energy bills.

rock creek forest: Creating a Greener Silver Spring - 06/04/11 05:14 AM
A new nonprofit organization is taking shape in Silver Spring, and it's bringing together residents, businesses and county officials, says Gazette.net.
The purpose of this nonprofit called Silver Spring Green is to make the city's downtown area greener and to reach out to both businesses and residents to help with the cause of sustainable living. Currently it's a very grass roots effort that's getting much positive feedback from all who've gotten involved.
This effort is similar to a program in Bethesda called Bethesda Green, but the Silver Spring group wants to put their city's own unique mark on the project, emphasizing … (3 comments)

rock creek forest: Report Gifts of Real Estate or Face the IRS - 06/02/11 04:13 PM
If you live in Silver Spring, Rosemary Hills, DC Metro or Virginia and you've recently gifted a relative with real estate, the IRS may have its eyes on you. The Wall Street Journal reports that the government agency is fighting to use land-transfer records to discover un-reported gifts of real estate between family members.
Recent legislation has raised to $5 million the limit on how much a person can gift in a lifetime without paying a gift tax. However, a gift to one person of more than $13,000 is supposed to be reported to the IRS so that appropriate transfer taxes … (2 comments)

rock creek forest: Be a Stand-Out Buyer in the DC Home Market - 05/26/11 02:41 PM
In today's housing market, the buyer has generally held all the cards. But that's beginning to change according to a recent Washington Times article which says that Bethesda, Chevy Chase and other areas are starting to see some real buyer competition. This includes even the "slow movers" such as foreclosures and short sales.
Rather than increased demand, lower inventory is creating this situation, and it's happening across a very broad range of home prices, not just the lower-priced homes. If only one or two homes are listed in a popular neighborhood, you'll likely see lots of competing offers. As I stated … (0 comments)

rock creek forest: No Coins for the Meter? In Silver Spring, There's an App for That! - 05/20/11 05:51 AM
Silver Spring has joined Bethesda as a location that offers pay-by-cell parking.  Wheaton and Montgomery Hills will be added by this summer.
What is pay-by-cell parking?  It's the ability to use your cell phone to add time to a parking meter that is pay-by-cell ready, which is currently about 4,500 meters in Silver Spring according to the Gazette web site.
Besides the advantage of not having to carry around change for the meter, there are other bonuses. One is that you'll get a text message when your meter is about to expire so you can add time via your cell phone … (5 comments)

rock creek forest: How to Weather a Short Sale - 05/05/11 03:11 AM
What is a short sale? It's when homeowners in a bad financial situation sell their home for less than the amount due on the mortgage, and all proceeds revert to the lender. This is sometimes referred to as being underwater. And while short sales can be an appealing alternative to a foreclosure, it's not necessarily an easier process. If you live in Chevy Chase, Rosemary Hills, or any other neighborhood and are contemplating a short sale, here are some things you need to know from the AOL Real Estate website.
Consult the Experts - If you're considering a short-sell, talk to … (2 comments)

Whether you're buying a lovely old "fixer-upper" in Silver Spring or brand-new construction in Rock Creek Forest, you need a home inspection inside and out. From the RealtyTimes website, here is some general information on inspections.
A home inspection will vary with the kind of property you are buying.  According to the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI), a standard inspection will cover the following areas:

rock creek forest: For Earth Day, Flowers and Rain Gardens in Chevy Chase - 04/22/11 02:37 PM
As they have for the past 15 years, volunteers from the Chevy Chase Citizens' Association have made things a little more colorful by planting flowers in tree boxes along the streets of Chevy Chase.  While it's a nice touch for Earth Day, the Association actually keeps up the tree boxes throughout the year, says the Chevy Chase Patch.
At the same time, volunteers with the Friends of Rock Creek's Environment (FORCE) were sprucing up a community rain garden that they planted three years ago. As in the tree boxes, rain garden plants help filter toxins out of the water that seeps … (0 comments)
