hurricane: The Big Secret About Hurricane, West Virginia - 10/07/07 02:48 AM
I’ve been trying to think about the “big secret” in Hurricane, West Virginia.  If I had a new client moving in from somewhere else, what would be the most important thing to clue them in about?  I’ve been mulling it over ….
While I was thinking about it, I walked down to the bus stop to get my Little One.  I met the usual group of neighborhood parents there.  One neighbor had her hair cut short and I told her I liked it, she looked “sporty” and younger somehow.  She told me she might as well cut it off, the doctors … (6 comments)

hurricane: Flowers and a Lot of Heart - 09/19/07 05:42 AM
This morning Georgeann and I went across the street to Teays Valley Flowers & More to get flowers for a coworker.  We braved the traffic of Teays Valley Road and just hoofed it.
I hadn't been there in a while I was surprised at their pretty arrangements and very reasonable prices.  We found what we were looking for (and more!) and got ready to leave.
Before we walked out the door, Georgeann told the women there that she always uses them for flowers, ever since her grandson in the service asked her to get flowers for his wife while I was in … (24 comments)

hurricane: My Chat With The Mayor - 07/15/07 11:49 PM
Yesterday I got a phone call from Scott Edwards, the new mayor of Hurricane.  Apparently I'm not the only person who uses Google Alerts, and Scott’s name popped up on The Putnam Scoop, my new local blog.
I’d written a little reminder about that whole dog limit law issue.  (I’m not a fan.)  Scott mentioned in the city council meeting in June, before he was elected, that he would like to remove the limit of two dogs from the language of the law.  He said he felt, as I do, that our other nuisance laws already cover any issues that … (28 comments)

hurricane: Hurricane, WV Elections Tomorrow, June 12th! - 06/11/07 05:04 AM
Hurricane, West Virginia is in for a BIG change tomorrow!  After 40 years Mayor Raymond Peak is retiring.  (Thank you again, Mayor Peak, for your service all these years!)  It's time to elect a new mayor!!
With our Walmart set to open within months and the additional businesses that will ride in on it's coattails, managing our city is just going to become more and more complex.  Walmart alone is going to add nearly $1,000,000 to Hurricane's budget next year!  Our current budget is 2.7 million.  Think about THAT.
Take a little time to think about what changes you want for Hurricane.  Then … (6 comments)

hurricane: Hurricane Town Meeting: What About Our Dogs? - 06/04/07 11:51 PM
Last night was Hurricane's Town Meeting.  City Council members voted down a city ordinance that would have required dog kennels built to (in my humble opinion) insanely specific standards.  It would have required:
Skylights or windows so that there is light during the day.Fenced runs that are enclosed and visually screened from the general public and from the direction of neighboring houses.A roof conforming to residential standards including R-13 insulation and sides must match the residential dwelling.  Must be built within 10 feet of the back of the property owner's residence.  Must have a concrete floor.Must have a drainage ditch leading to … (35 comments)

hurricane: What Makes a House a Home, Hurricane, WV - 05/23/07 08:28 AM
What makes my house a home is the memories we've built over the years together.  The snapshots in my mind when I think of "Home" look something like this:
Looking impossibly young, shopping with my husband for our first home.  Taking my parents along because we have no idea what we're doing.Walking around inside our 900 square foot brick rancher and wondering what we'll ever do with all that room.  Big yard, time to get my first dog.  Off to the shelter!Finding out I was pregnant.  SICK.  Stretch marks.  Fat.  DELIGHTED.Bringing home our  baby, rocking her to sleep every night in the chair Mom reupholstered … (17 comments)

hurricane: Where to go in Putnam County: Bark at the Park - 04/16/07 01:05 AM

This year's Bark at the Park is scheduled for May 19th at Valley Park in Hurricane, WV.
Details are still being worked out and subject to change, but so far we're looking forward to another fun time!
Police dogs will be there.  I always enjoy this, as I generally like cops anyway (my brother is one) and I'm a doggie fan.  I met a police drug dog and his trainer at another function once.  I asked the policewoman how she knew if someone had drugs.  She told me her dog would sit.  Just then, an adorable little girl walked up holding a smalled … (14 comments)

hurricane: Showing Off Real Estate Shows, Solstice Farm - 04/09/07 11:58 PM

Real Estate Shows, the program I use to really show off my listings, has had some really good updates recently and I wanted to show them off a little.
Last night I walked a beautiful property with some of my favorite clients.  (I feel it's OK to say that, they are a warm loving family and have brought me some good business, besides.)
This property was so beautiful that my camera just would not stay out of my hands.  The farm is being subdivided into large building lots, ranging in size from 1+ to 4+ acres.  It's located about … (13 comments)

hurricane: POLL: Are You For or Against Dog Limit Laws? - 04/08/07 11:54 PM
I had a post a while back about the dog limit law in Hurricane.  I got a little fired up about the subject and I ranted a bit.
I not only posted to my blog,  I also sent that entry out in the form of a newsletter to my clients, friends and family who were close enough to be affected by the law.   For the first time ever, I had more views on a newsletter than times it was sent out!  In other words, it was forwarded many times.  I realized I wasn't the only one fired up.
Last week I got … (35 comments)

hurricane: Hurricane High School Class of 1987 UPDATED - 04/05/07 11:36 AM
My 20th high school reunion is this summer.
And no, I don't care about telling you my age, I'm 37 and glad for every year God chooses to bless me with.  I'M STILL HERE.  I have friends that aren't, so I promise to never, ever be ashamed of my age.
From what I've heard, Wendy Wandling and Molly Hauldren are planning our reuinion.  They did a great job with the last one, so I am really looking forward to this year!
We'll start at the Homecoming football game Friday August 24th between Hurricane and Winfield.  I haven't been to a high school game … (24 comments)

hurricane: Hurricane's 10th Annual Civil War Weekend - 03/25/07 09:52 AM
This weekend was our 10th annual Civil War Weekend at Hurricane's Valley Park.
This event is an excuse for a day off.  Walking around the fields at Valley Park is suddenly like taking a trip back in time.  You're allowed to walk around camp, where the soldiers camp out like they would have during the Civil War.  It feels like spying on people from another time, and it's fascinating.
Cannons are set up on the battle fields, ready for war.  However, I was surprised by the genteel manners of the men in uniform.  I was quite pleased by the tipped … (8 comments)

hurricane: Where To Go in Putnam County: The Museum in the Community - 03/25/07 08:07 AM
The Museum in the Community started in 1983 with the combined efforts of the Huntington Museum of Art and area high school kids.
This museum got it's start in a strip mall as an art class learned how to run a museum.  Apparently, they took their role VERY seriously.  Today we have a very stylish building for the museum located at Valley Park in Hurricane.
I remember those early days, with the surprisingly professional art by the students gracing the walls.  You'll still find art from local students at this museum, as well an interesting round of exhibits.  There … (3 comments)

hurricane: A Rendezvous at Rendezvous: Where to Go in Putnam County - 03/16/07 04:03 AM
This morning I treated myself.  I met my friend Yuki at a new local hotspot, Rendezvous House of Coffee.
I arrived early, knowing I wanted to snap a few pictures so I could share my visit.  I'm getting used to walking up to people with my business card out, telling them that I write a blog for my business and I'd like to give them a little free advertising.  So far this has granted me nothing but smiles and an invitation to take all the pictures I want.  The staff at Rendezvous was extremely friendly and helped me feel right at home.

hurricane: Hey, Builders! We Need More Like This! - 03/10/07 07:13 AM
At Open Houses these days it seems like everyone is looking for that perfect home.  They want a first floor master bedroom.  They want that master bath to have his and hers sinks.  They want closets so big they can get lost in them.
The search is over.  This newly constructed duplex in Oakbridge has it all.
First floor master?  Check His and Hers sinks?  Check. Outrageously huge closets?  OH, YEAH.  This home is bright and open.  Windows on three sides of the open living-dining-kitchen really bring in the light.  The kitchen cabinets are a gorgeous maple, with wood … (2 comments)

hurricane: The Murals of Hurricane, WV - 03/06/07 09:32 PM

If you visit the city of Hurricane, keep your eyes open as you drive around.
Our city is full of creative people and if you look around, you'll find murals hidden in plain sight.  On the side of the Volunteer Fire Department you'll see a mural of fire fighters responding to emergencies.  (This one is my favorite.)
Peek at the side of businesses and you might just be surprised!  This is just a small sample of what you might see on you way from here to there in Hurricane.  Be aware and you just might get rewarded for your efforts by finding a hidden gem!

hurricane: Where To Go In Putnam County: Paws and Shop - 03/02/07 04:45 AM
Looking for someplace to go in Putnam County?  Let me recommend the Paws and Shop thrift shop run by the Putnam County Humane Society.
This shop is filled with a little of everything!  You'll find a variety of new and used items.  I am a book lover, so I love to browse through their book section.  Today I dropped off a trunkload of books and managed to leave with only a few more.  It was a good day.
You'll be greeted at the shop by the friendly volunteers.  Among the "volunteers" are two cats, Freckles and Danny.  Usually there are several cats … (5 comments)

hurricane: My First NEGATIVE Post - 02/26/07 01:33 AM
I'm angry this morning.  Usually I'm a pretty happy person, spreading the joy.  I smile at strangers.  Not today.  Let me start from the beginning.
I have a client moving here from out of state.  She's a lovely, spirited woman with a great laugh and a generous heart.  She has taken in a little series of tiny dogs that were unadoptable for whatever reason.  She's gained a reputation as a loving person who will not turn away a little dog in need.  In the course of trying to meet her housing needs, I spoke to the other agents in my office.  One of … (75 comments)

hurricane: Watch This Space. - 02/20/07 07:29 AM
So, this guy Mark had a really cool idea for a blog contest and I signed right up before I let myself have any second thoughts.  Then I worried, what in the world would I write about ... !?  Turns out my problem wasn't a LACK of ideas, it was TOO MANY IDEAS.  I realized, THIS is just what I need to be blogging about -- my "Idea Vault".  Welcome to my Ideas for Future Posts, and I hope they give you ideas of your own.  (Just don't steal mine!)
I'm from West Virginia and so far the local agents on Active Rain have been a little on the quiet side.  This is a … (15 comments)

hurricane: Where To Go In Putnam County: Ferguson Tea Room - 02/15/07 02:29 AM

There's a little gem hidden in plain sight on Main Street in Hurricane, WV.  It's the Ferguson Tea Room & Root Cellar Herbs, owned by Sarah White-Cresap.
The tea room is decorated beautifully and features the painting skills of Sarah's daughter Anna.  (Be sure to look up, the ceiling will amaze you!)  Each table is graced with candles and flowers.  Place settings are varied so that each person has a unique dining experience.  Part of the fun is comparing your china patterns to those of your dining partner.
The food is not only delicious but is prepared with healthy ingredients.  … (2 comments)
