Come see the JamFest Indie Film Festival in Hammond on September 24-25, 2010.  For the third year in a row, the indie film fest will be screening 50 films from around the world, including several made in our own United States.  A special screening of children's films will be held Saturday morning as well.  The Northshore Regional Endowment of the Arts is sponsoring this festival in downtown Hammond.

Hammond is helping birds harmed by the gulf oil spill by opening its Oiled Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in the old 84 Lumber building (84 Pride Dr, Hammond).  It may seem odd to have a bird rescue center located away from the action, so to speak, but its location near the airport and away from possible hurricane zones makes it the perfect place to help clean off and nurse gull, pelicans, egrets and other birds affected by the BP oil spill.

The Tangipahoa Parish Tax Assessor's office has discovered an error in the Hammond taxpayers' favor.  It appears that, beginning in 1987, Hammond homeowners were incorrectly charged for taxes within the Hammond school system when they shouldn't have been.  It was determined to be a human error due to the fact that, at one time, the city's boundaries and the school district's boundaries were the same.  However, when the city was annexed over the years, homeowners were erroneously charged for the school district tax in the newly annexed areas.

Help Stamp Out Hunger in Hammond this Saturday, May 8 by placing bags filled with nonperishable items next to their mailboxes for the mail carriers to pick up.  The items picked up this Saturday will benefit the local Tangi Food Pantry.  But, this is a national event happening all across the country as well.  This marks the 18th year the "Stamp Out Hunger" program has been in effect.  Since its inception in 1993, the "Stamp Out Hunger" program has collected 982.7 millions pounds of food to help stock the nation's food pantries.  The Campbell Soup Company as well as the US … (1 comments)
