Clay County School New Dress Code

Fleming Island High School in Clay County FLThe Clay County School Board has responded to parents' and teachers' comments on "What can be done about the way students dress?"

The 2009-2010 Dress Code requires pants to be at the waist, shorts and skirts no shorter than 3" above the knee, and shoulders covered - no spaghetti straps or even three-finger straps.

According to Ben Wortham, Superintendent, area stores have been notified of the new dress code and asked to stock their clothes accordingly.

This is bound to be controversial among students but even our 19-year old daughter commented that there were some girls whose shorts were really not suitable for school. If a teenager admits it, you can believe it.

I wonder how long it will be before someone or some group files a lawsuit against this dress code policy.

Donna, sadly you may be right. But I'm personally glad they are trying to put their foot down for somewhat modest dressing.

I remeber that when I was in high school The Beatles were popular, and we all wanted to have mop tops. If your hair was over your ears, they sent you home. I didn't mind standards back then, and it did not interfere with my education. Maybe classical education is back!

I'm a student in Clay County in high school and I think the dress code is beneficial- to a certain extent. SOME students have worn inappropriate clothing, and its the few that ruin it for everyone. The clothes that I own are not inappropriate, yet I cannot wear them anymore. I would love to see how the students and parents react when a bunch of well-earned money is going to have to be spent on a brand new wardrobe. I know it sure as hell affects me, it HAS to affect everyone- rich or poor.

Haley, it is going to affect everyone but I agree with you that it will be beneficial. It seems it is always the few that ruin it for the majority. Thanks for commenting.

I'm a clay student and i agree with Haley. I think it's ridiculous to chang the dresscode!!! If anything the punishment needs to be stronger. Students are going to want to were inapropriate clothing just to get sent home big deal. Maybe ISS or a referal and detention are what the need is. Don't change the dresscode just because of trashy girls and boys who refuse to listen. It is gay!

Bre, you make some excellent points. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Maybe if you get involved with Student Government, you will have access to the Administraiton of the School and can encourage them to make some changes.

I absolutely love the fact that now I cant wear shorts that cover half of my thigh in FLORIDA id totally get it if we were in someplace colder but Florida for real I have never been told by anyone that my bra strap is distracting them I've never been told that my shorts that are actually reasonable length are distracting could people just give us a break yes I know that some people dress wayyy too revealing but could we get a break were in Florida I'm wearing jeans everyday because the shorts aren't long enough or I really hate how they don't just aren't really fitting me I'm sweating in holding area were only out there for around 10 minutes just give us some slack please. Also this does interfere with my education you might not believe me but noticeable sweat all over your shirt makes you worried about if others are gonna judge you and say your disgusting and the fact that there is no real reason that we are being dress coded makes me worried that the school board is more focused on our clothing than making our education better.
