I usually shy away from any type of political topic. Not because I don't care about politics but rather because people, generally speaking, very much have a for or against type atitude with politics and I don't like "debating" with someone that's not going to listen to any other side but their own anyway. However, I was speaking with a good friend the other that day, who works for a city department, and he said that his department must spend ALL their budgeted money at least 2 months before the end of the fiscal year or the city manager starts taking it away from them!
He takes it away because a) they obviously don't need it, and b) all the money (and more) has to be spent if they want to get more money next year. What the heck is wrong with this picture?! Wouldn't you love to go in and ask your boss for a 20% raise, not because you're good at your job or that you saved the company a bunch of money, but because you managed to spend 20% MORE than you brought home last year, so you need the raise. I'm sure that'll work well.
But that's the way the whole system is currently set up. States must prove that they need Federal funds by showing that they spent all of their money and more. Counties searching for state funds do the same. Where does it all end? With the taxpayers, of course!
The Founding Fathers set up our system as a SMALL centralized government. A government that was supposed to be supported by funding from the people. It's anything but that now. It's a massive, money-hungry beast that constantly needs more "food" to feed it's appetite. Does anybody else see anything wrong with our government giving away billions of dollars for grants, "free" loans, useless research, and a ton of other things? I wonder, how much better would the individual be if we only had to supply enough taxes to pay for the amount of government we really need?
Being a Representative, Congressman, or even President was supposed to be a part-time or short-time job. It was a service, like the military. You did your duty and then you returned to your "real" life. Now, it has become a power grab for the wealthy. It doesn't take much to realize that there is more to it than "serving your country" when a person will spend millions and millions of dollars to win a position that pays $200K a year.
Most people see this, too, they just choose to ignore the issue or simply think that "there is nothing I can do about it." I know. I'm guilty of it, too. However, it's getting worse, much worse. It's time to make a change before it's too late, if it's not already too late. The government was created "for the people, by the people." It's time for the PEOPLE to tell the government, enough is enough.
