The Government Wants To Be Your Landlord

In an article today on Reuters, it is reported that the Obama Administration is considering allowing those unable to make mortgage payments to remain in their homes as tenants. The homeowners would surrender their ownership under one version of a plan under consideration.

While the administration has realized the failure of its current attempts to aid struggling homeowners, proponents of the new plan would have many obstacles to overcome. And while the government has readily assumed ownership of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, AIG, auto manufacturers and others, I doubt they truly want to become landlords of millions of private homes.

It may be good that the government is still seeking to resolve the housing crisis, but I, for one, think this idea could possibly create one of the greatest boondoggles in history. The bureaucracy necessary to oversee such a project would be massive.

Wow like no one saw this coming. They want to own your car, your children and now your home.

Charles - There were times I might have given them my children, and they can have my car; but I don't want them as landlord.

So John, is the theory here that the price of the rent would be lower than the price of the mortgage? Plus who and how are they going to manage all the administrative functions that go along with such an endeavor? Oh never mind, it's pretty obvious ... we the taxpayer will just foot that bill as well.

I recently heard this too.  I've also heard that banks want to start working with the tenants of properties that they are being foreclosed on.

Sue - I don't think they've quite figured it out yet. Hopefully they'll see it can't work. Who will pay off the mortgage--I guess that's pretty obvious too.

Michelle - Working with the tenants on foreclosed properties is much simpler than becoming a landlord for millions of detached homes. What a nightmare!

What you're forgetting is; a huge beauracracy in Washington, and a whole lot of people dependant on the administration for the roof over their head, creates a larger voter base for the providers (Obama administration). At this point I think the ONLY thing this administration wants is more power, over more people.

Jon - It reminds me of a balloon that we keep inflating; at some point it can't take anymore.

I am with you on this one even though boondoggle could be a slight understatement. This is a crazy idea that would be a huge mistake for America.

Wow, I had read something about keeping homeowners in homes despite the loss of a job - maybe this is what the article was referring to.

This certainly has all the makings of a fiasco.

John - job creation, more government jobs that is, and, apparrantly, more section 8 housing. Guarenteed to drive real estate prices down.

Trey - I can't imagine any scenario where this would work.

Mark - My guess is they'll abandon the idea--but you never know.

Mike - Maybe that's where the promised jobs are coming from : )
