Entrepreneur Identifies 10 Do-Business Cities

Entrepreneurmagazine has identified 10 major cities that it says encourage business start-ups.

The magazine chose cities that provide government incentives, have affordable commercial rents, have public officials who are open to new ideas, and have a population that's growing.

The most entrepreneurial cities identified in the July issue are:

  1. Las Vegas
  2. Portland, Ore.
  3. Orlando
  4. San Diego, Calif.
  5. Phoenix
  6. Chapel Hill, N.C.
  7. Atlanta
  8. Madison, Wisc.
  9. Youngstown, Ohio
  10. Austin, Texas

Unemployment might be near 10 percent and the tourism industry is struggling to fill rooms, but these are the best reasons to set up shop in Las Vegas! With commercial rents, cost of living and employee wages as low as they've ever been in modern memory, small businesses have a chance to do the cash-intensive phase of business development at discount rates. "The slowing economy has provided opportunities," says Kara Kelley, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce. "Housing is more affordable than it has been in eight years. Smart business owners can take advantage of that." And when the economy does rev up? They'll be basking in the sunshine.

Kimberly:  First of all... great picture.  I love the golf course green and the waterway, but really like the way the buildings look on the far side of the water.  I like the different colors, very colorful, and strangely enough, very romantic.

Good for Vegas.  I find it hard to believe that Youngstown, Ohio would be on the list.  But... if it's on the list, it's on the list.  I also find it really strange that Youngstown would be a step ahead of Austin, Texas.  Anyways... thanks for the info.

Karen: I'm from Ohio and I agree with you!  I was just as shocked when I found that out...but I know all my friends and family back home will be happy to know that Ohio finally made a top 10 list about something positve!  Thanks for the comment.
