I caught this interesting segment on my local news last night regarding Vampire Energy. It discusses how when you think you've turned off an appliance it may still be sucking energy (bad for both the environment and your energy bill):

After doing a little internet research I discovered that October is Energy Awareness Month and, appropriately, a number of articles on the energy sucking topic:

Emer, I heard about this vampire energy sucking business a while back, and went out and bought special plus that when you turn off the appliance, it's actually not wasting any longer.  I do that for things that I don't like to unplug every day, like the computer ....

Other appliances that we can unplug, we do, like the toaster,t he coffee machine, the kettle, VCR, etc.  Every little bit helps.

Phantom energy loss does use a lot of energy.  We installed phantom energy switches to turn off all power for the entertainment/TV area and garage doors at a new house we just built.
