Banks Losing A Major Source Of Revenue

By

checkbookIn a ruling announced today from the Federal Reserve and set to take effect on July 1, 2010, Banks will no longer be able to charge the exorbitant overdraft fees that have become so common in recent years. A source of billions in revenue, these fees have become so common that many banks rely on them as a major source of profit. The new ruling requires customers to grant permission to the bank before payment of items that exceed the customer’s account balance and applies to debit card and ATM transactions.

Consumers will no longer have to worry about spending $5 at McDonalds and being hit with a $35 overdraft fee. However, those who do opt for overdraft coverage will, of course, still suffer the consequences.

Another option, though a bit unconventional, but which costs nothing and insures that such excessive bank charges will NEVER be charged, is for customers to balance their checking account monthly and not make purchases when they don’t have money. While such a solution may seem outlandish to many, those who use this system report that it is fail safe.

Good Advice John,

It would be interesting to know what percentage of people do balance their bank accounts.  We would bet it is low.  Banks do make mistakes and take money out of accounts that they shouldn't.  Lost money for those that don't reconcile.

Speaking of that you should do a blog, step by step on how to reconcile a bank account.

Al & Peggy - Yes, banks do make mistakes, and what's worse, if it's in the bank's favor and you don't catch it within 60 days, they bank doesn't have to pay you. Of course if the mistake is in your favor, there's no time limit--thanks to the banking lobby.

As for a post on how to reconcile a bank statement, what's that?  :  )

Hi, John. You know, I used to mail in my credit card payment the day the bill arrived and I would still get a "late fee." I began to suspect that they received my payment within the billing cycle but dragged their feet and deliberately did not get it "posted" so they could whack my account $39. Could I have made the payment online? Sure, of course I could have but I didn't. I paid off the cards and now I pay cash. I find that I spend FAR less when I can see the actual money leave.

Right John, balance the checking account monthly and don't make purchases when you don't have money?

Like that will ever work-

lol

John,

That's a big part of the mess going on in the States right now; spending money people didn't have. It caught up to everybody.

Rich - Not complicated at all!

Terry - That's why we are having so many bankruptcies.

Yep, I often found it funny how some expect to use their bank accounts as if it were a line of credit but don't want to pay for it. I have a daughter who's constantly doing this, but at least she doesn't complain about the fee. LOL.

John, how dare you suggest that anyone should have to be responsible to balance their own checkbook! Maybe the new laws will include a bailout for those who write bad checks to the evil predatory banks.

I had a bank mistake that caused a bounced check...  They entered a $650.00 rent check as a $6,500.00 check.  They honored it "as a courtesy"... and then bounced 15 checks... at $30/ea.  Oddly, while they took $6500 out of my account, they only credited the landlord with $650.  And they were quick to cortrect the original mistake.  They didn't think they needed to refund the $450 in bounce charges, though.

I won in the end, but somebody needed a solid boot to the head...

Lane - The fees have been a major profit center for banks, and they've bled it for all it's worth.
