Bank of America Steps up Loan Modification Efforts

By
Mortgage and Lending with American Capital Corporation

4Good loan modification news from Bank of America! According to the bank, the number of permanent modifications the bank holds with HAMP has jumped from just 98 as of November 2009 to 3,200 as of this month.

The reason for this jump is that the bank has decided to place more emphasis on pushing people through the program and getting their modifications finalized as opposed to just getting as many people as possible in the program. I find this a curious coincidence considering that on November 30th of last year the federal government decided to stop giving banks HAMP subsidy payments for merely placing borrowers into trial loan modifications, instead they would receive the money only if the modification was made permanent.

In short, Bank of America, along with other banks, was trying to place as 6many people as possible into trial loan modifications in order to get the most money. Keep in mind that there is no guarantee that a trial loan modification will be made permanent, even if the borrower makes all their payments on time. In essence, banks were receiving money for doing nothing. Once the government required that they actually… you know… help people in order to get the money, they stepped up their permanent modification efforts. Funny how that worked out.

Regardless of the bank’s motives, this is a good sign for borrowers looking to get their loan modifications made permanent, as Bank of America alone has reported it has an additional 9,000 borrowers they have sent permanent loan modification documents to that they are waiting to get back.

Would it not be nice if they would answer the phone, answer the questions and get the offers through so we could sell these homes and help both the buyer and the seller.

I am not confident that BOA really will follow through with increased permanent loan modifications. Thanks for posting.

I hope this is a trend that continues.  There are so many who get trial mods and so few who get permanent ones.

Diane - Yes, it would be nice to just pick up the phone and do as you say.  Can you imagine if we did that, we would not have any customers and soon be out of business?  hmmmmm!!

Eric - Since BOA is currently responsible for almost 45% of the banking in the united states, i think they will do what they want.  The numbers as far as modifications shows that they are at the bottom of the barrel, so I agree with you - they won't be following thru.

That is a huuuuge coincidence.  What are the chances eh!  I wonder if the powers that be sit down and see how far they can stretch doing the minimum possible and counting all the money they are going to give the executive with the best stretch plan.

I actually have had a lot of success getting my calls answered by BofA.  But that's where it stops.  I've been very disappointed with BofA most of all.  Secondly Chase.  I feel like everything BofA does is just for their bottom line, and could give a %$& about their customer experience.  I cancelled by BofA c/c 6 months ago.

BTW, thanks for helping me with my clients questions last month.  She decided she didn't really have a legitimate hardship and is looking at other options.

If you're looking to refi through the HARP program check out your local credit union. Many have much better rates than BAC.
