Super Bowl Cure . . . If You Don't Like Cute . . . Stop Here! - - -

The strategy for today was to take my wife Mary to some event that would offset my engagement in that All America pastime of gorging on the Super Bowl. So, the event we just took in this morning was a rabbit and cavy (guinea pig) 4-H show in Issaquah, to the southeast of Seattle. A small sample of the pictures is below.

What I didn't figure on was learning from the leader of the group that its very existence is threatened by King County not funding as it did in the past. This is a real shame when you see young children enjoying an engagement with animals and having wholesome fun. We didn't see any video games in use. But, more on that rant about government's short sidedness in a future post . . . now on with the show . . .

Many years ago, I inherited Hairy, a long haired guinea pig from my neice. The family was moving. The idea was to find a home for Hairy, but as expected, I fell in love with the little fella. We had him for quite a while, until his teeth started to overgrow. We gave him all the recommended objects for him to gnaw on, but the teeth kept growing. I was heartsick when Hairy died, but will always remember my long-haired little buddy!

Hi Margo, my wife Mary had a wonderful guinea pig when she worked in Washington DC. She has such fond memories of that companionship. Today was very special for us.

Frank, I see it all over the place.  Cutting very worthwhile programs that keep kids involved and it is ones that really don't cost a lot.  The counties and cities and state for that matter will spend several Million Dollars on an ice skating areana, and then cut $5000 from a 4-H program.  STUPID!!!!

Wow, those are some furry fellows. Where are they from? I am wondering if you would ever see such a thing in the wild somewhere?

Hi Frank,

While I certainly think these events are essential for Children to learn and have a hands experience, and while government may be shortsighted in their priorities, certainly no reason while those who feel strongly couldn't keep it going. But it does take commitment and that requires sacrifice and service. Having been a small part of 4-H growing up ( 4-H Band ), this endeavor needs  commitment and support. It comes best from those with a passion for it's continuance. Also a Boy Scount and it too is best when operated without governement support. I have seen first hand why that it is true.

Hi William, (San Diego Real Estate Voice authored by William Johnson GRI CRS e-Pro CDPE (RE/MAX Associates)

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. You make a lot of good points. First of all, I agree that we need to get government out of our lives more than we need to compel our various government entities into more involvement in our day to day activities. But, at the same time, government needs to slowly withdraw from those activities that support the values so important to the survival of our nation. I think those values as stated in the 4-H pledge align with what this country needs right now more than ever. So, a sustainable transition from public to private support is a common sense approach I hope is followed.
