The "things" sticking up are a old pier/boat dock, now reduced to wooden stumps.
The shot was taken from a small beach behind Fort Moultrie, Mount Pleasant, SC looking out towards Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor.
It's a great beach for walking, fishing and watching the boats come in and out. Not a swimming or paddling beach due to the risk from currents.
