Timberline Lodge . . . Mt. Hood's (Not So Hidden) Treasure

There is a great article about Timberline Lodge, which is nestled on the south of Mt. Hood

The photos are amazing, and the article is a good read too!

Inside America's Iconic, Unique Ski Lodge by Thom Patterson.  Photo #3 in this article shows what the place looks like in the winter!

Mt. Hood offers the outdoor enthusiasts with plenty to do!  And if you think summer would deter skiing, not so.  There is year-round skiing, night skiing, and that includes the summer months as well.

Remember the movie "The Shining" . . . it was filmed at Timberline Lodge and grounds.

I've taken a few day trips to the Lodge just for the pleasant drive, and to marvel at the architecture and construction. During the depression the WPA (Works Project Administration) hailed this as one of its many successes.  Large timbers were used in construction and rocks were quarried.  A good combination of natural resources and human know-how.

Timberline Lodge was dedicated Sept. 28, 1937 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.  "This Timberline Lodge marks a venture that was made possible by W.P.A., emergency relief work, in order that we may test the workability of recreational facilities installed by the Government itself and operated under its complete control." (cited)

If you're visting the Metro Portland area, or have lived here for years . . . take some time to enjoy this great, local . . . and iconic . . . treasure.

The Timberline Lodge look absolutely gorgeous! And, "The Shining" was one of my favorite movies! Does the lodge also have the hedge labyrinth as seen in the movies?

Carla, that is just a spectacular place, I would love to take a trip there. Thank you! And I didn't know "The Shining" had anything to do with this place.

Sometimes I think that the WPA could be a good thing if resurrected again!

I have been to Timberline Lodge many, many times.  I used to live in Gresham, Troutdale and Beaverton, and each time visitors from out of state would visit, I would take them up to Timberline Lodge.  Don't forget about the movie, "Bend of the River", with Jimmy Stewart, which had a scene filmed above Timberline Lodge.

Hi Craig  . . . I think the hedges were added for the movie.  It's really cold there for hedges.  HA HA HA  That would be a cool tourist attraction come to think of it.

Hey Andrea -- you're welcome here, and I'll play tour guide.  The Lodge is beautiful inside.  The last time I went up there I wasn't blogging, so I didn't take photos.  Next time I will.

Hi Bob . . . I'll watch that.  I like Jimmy Stewart.  Yeah, so you know how lovely this place is -- in all kinds of weather!

Hi Carla-

A WPA project?  No wonder it reminds me of Crater Lake Lodge.

There is little that is more spectacular than the sight of Mt. Hood, whatever the season.  I'd love to stay at the Lodge.  It really looks like a treasure!
