Inside America's Iconic, Unique Ski Lodge by Thom Patterson. Photo #3 in this article shows what the place looks like in the winter!
Mt. Hood offers the outdoor enthusiasts with plenty to do! And if you think summer would deter skiing, not so. There is year-round skiing, night skiing, and that includes the summer months as well.
Remember the movie "The Shining" . . . it was filmed at Timberline Lodge and grounds.
I've taken a few day trips to the Lodge just for the pleasant drive, and to marvel at the architecture and construction. During the depression the WPA (Works Project Administration) hailed this as one of its many successes. Large timbers were used in construction and rocks were quarried. A good combination of natural resources and human know-how.
Timberline Lodge was dedicated Sept. 28, 1937 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. "This Timberline Lodge marks a venture that was made possible by W.P.A., emergency relief work, in order that we may test the workability of recreational facilities installed by the Government itself and operated under its complete control." If you're visting the Metro Portland area, or have lived here for years . . . take some time to enjoy this great, local . . . and iconic . . . treasure.
