These big plastic fleas and ticks are hanging above the reception desk at Dogwood Animal Hospital in Jamestown, Tennessee, a vivid reminder that spring is here and it's time to start thinking about protection for pets.
Veterinarian Cindy Johnson has a very busy full-service practice, with a constant stream of cats and dogs coming to the office. She also tends to large animals, making the occasional farm call although, with such a large equine population in the equestrian communities near Big South Fork National Park, many local horse owners, myself included, trailer their horses into town for routine matters like annual vaccinations. Vet Tech, Gene Hull, has a way with horses and nobody gets nasal vaccine up a horse's nostrils faster than he does!
"Dr. Cindy" herself grew up in Jamestown and attended Tennessee Tech in nearby Cookeville for her undergraduate studies. Then it was on to the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville for the next four years. After graduating in 1994, she returned home and opened her practice.
Incoming patients and their owners are are greeted by her two Standard Poodles, O'Malley and Winston, before making their way to the reception desk where her staff, Janie Cowans and Teresa Larraway, keep the 10,000 client files in order and appointments moving along like a well-oiled machine.
Dogwood Animal Hospital is a staunch supporter of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary and assists with their low-cost neuter/spay program as a public service.
This is what life is like in a small town; everybody knows Dr. Cindy….and there probably aren't many dogs, cats (and other small animals) in Jamestown, Tennessee who haven't passed through these doors!!
