It’s Earth Day! How are you helping to save 837 Tons of Paper?

By
Real Estate Agent with DocuSign

From the first Earth Day in 1970, going green has become a serious issue with businesses and consumers creating positive change by making simple changes such as paying bills online, using public transportation, recycling and other conservation initiatives. For businesses around the globe, DocuSign Electronic Signature Service is a key factor in successful green initiatives.

Where can you go to find a green solution for your business?

It's easy.  DocuSign Electronic Signature service.  To commemorate Earth Day, DocuSign calculated that users of DocuSign have created a more eco-friendly environment by reducing consumption of approximately 837 tons of paper or nearly 14,230 trees.  DocuSign has significantly reduced businesses reliance on traditional, more antiquated methods of communication by revolutionizing the way documents are shared, signed and stored. DocuSign eSignature service eliminates the need to print, fax, scan, mail and store paper documents by providing a fast, green easy to use electronic document signing process.  And when you consider the amount of paper that one real estate transaction can create, you can imagine how many trees would be saved, if everybody used DocuSign.

DocuSign Earth-Friendly Factoids

In honor of Earth Day's 40th anniversary, DocuSign has calculated additional green factoids to offer greater perspective on its role in providing a more eco-friendly alternative to conduct business.  In addition to the successful rescue of 14,230 trees, the amount of paper waste DocuSign has reduced:

  • If placed end-to-end, would reach 117,397,337 feet in total distance, which would line the edge of the continental United States twice or 22,234 miles-just 2,000 sheets shy of wrapping the Earth's equator. This is also five times longer than either the 4,300 mile length of Amazon River or the 4,132 mile length of the Nile River.
  • If stacked, would reach more than 2,846 stories in height. This is more than 2,745 more stories than one of the tallest buildings in the world, the Taipei 101. The Taipei 101 reaches 1,671 feet or 509 meters and is 101 stories in height.

 So how does it work?

DocuSign is a web-based solution so you can easily access DocuSign from any computer with internet.  Login into your DocuSign account, upload your documents to be signed, quickly drag and drop familiar yellow DocuSign Stick-eTabs®, and hit send (kind of like with email).  DocuSign  actually hold the documents in a secure server, while also sending an email to your signer's. The recipient(s) immediately receive the email notification that there are documents ready for e-signing, access the secure documents by a link in the email, adopt their e-signature and is then guided through the eSign process. It's literally click, click and you're done.  Once completed, DocuSign will send an email notification to all parties with a link to the final executed document. The document can be archived digitally, eliminating the need to print or physically store.

On the run all day?

DocuSign is available on your mobile device. Any document can be quickly accessed through a computer or any Web-enabled mobile device, including Apple® iPhone® or iPad®, RIM® BlackBerry®, Google® AndroidTM, Windows Mobile®smartphone.

In a nutshell, the result is a legally binding, fully ESIGN-compliant document supported by a comprehensive audit trail.

Yay Earth Day!!  Well I am trying to be earth conscious in my business in a couple of ways.

1.  I purchased a Tablo Pen.  This is a little pen that turns your laptop into a tablet.  Clients simply sign right on my computer screen, then I save it and email it to whoever needs it.  My clients only get a printed copy of the original offer and the final accepted offer (although they have all the others in PDF if they need to reference).  Check the electronic signing rules in your area though, I don't know if this is accepted everywhere or not.

2. Other than some handwritten cards from time to time, I do alot of my marketing and client care electronically..as I think most of us do now.

3. I give environmentally conscious closing gifts.  I know the big fluffy bow and all the celophane probably makes a lot of noise but really once all the packaging is gone what do you really have?  A box of crackers, a jar of mango chutney and a pile for the trash?  I don't know..not to offend any basket givers.  I'm just saying I have seen some pretty extravagant ones that cost a bundle and are gone in a couple of weeks.  I give a really good Cutco knife with all my info engraved on the blade..and I know they will still be using it everyday in 15 years..like I still use mine.

Thanks for your post

Hi Suzanne,

My community is really eco-friendly - I live in Ithaca, NY, and we are often noted in the media for being a great place to live, and having very earth-friendly policies.  So for example, we are a city that, on a minute level, recycles EVERYTHING - many of our restaurants and our local farmer's markets and community events have not only "trash" bins, but also, "compost" and "recycle" as well - all the time.  And some of our local businesses, notably Tompkins Trust Bank, has just last weekend sponsored a "Community Shred Day" where they invite the public to bring in all of their old documents that might otherwise end up in the landfill, and provide entertainment and incentives to get people to come out and participate.  And they do!  In general our town is very happy to cooperate because we feel a sense of mission about it, and I believe people here want to set a great example!

Happily reporting from South Hill, Ithaca, where it will be a lovely 56 degrees with bright sun today...

Hopefully this will be the year that our ignorant state legislators decide the digital signatures in real estate is a good thing. It is the topic of my blog post for today.

Thanks for the post.  I don't think we are allowed to use docusign just yet with our Real Estate Board but I"m sure it will come soon.  My business partner and I call ourselves The EcoAgents because we've taken additional training on Built Green construction but also it's how we run our business. We try to give environmentally sustainable gifts to clients, run contests, try to get the community involved as well.  If every tries a little to change their everyday life habits it will make a big difference.

Joe - DocuSign is legal in all 50 states so it is not the state legislators that are the problem.  So state agencies are slow to adopt electronic processes for things like recording deeds.  I would love to read your blog. Can you post a link or DM it to me?

Breanna - Green is a great way to go with your business and it sounds like you have it down.
