Country music and botanical gardens

On thing I like about Las Cruces is that no matter if you decide to go north, east, south, or west, there is a lil weekend getaway awaiting you! This past weekend we packed up a few items and headed to Albuquerque for the Brooks and Dunn farewell tour, along with the zoo, aquarium, and botanical gardens.

Although Brooks and Dunn were set to play in Las Cruces the following night, we had already purchased our tickets before they even opened the Las Cruces venue. We left Saturday morning, since it’s not a very long drive (3 hours or so), got there just in time to settle into our hotel room, threw some sunscreen on, and headed down to the Journal Pavilion, which is a fantastic outdoor concert venue with chair seating, grass seating, and lots of concession areas. We went pretty early, because we knew it was a sell-out and that lots of people would be waiting in line to snag places in the grass…

The sun beating down on us those couple of hours leading up to the concert really did make me want a margarita, but I have to be honest, I just couldn’t bring myself to spend $15 on a margarita half the size of the ones I’m used to at most Mexican restaurants here in Las Cruces.

The show began with Tyler Dickerson, and 17 year-old country singer, followed by Jason Aldean, and then finally Brooks and Dunn came out on stage and were just INCREDIBLE! They sang most of my favorites, Neon Moon, She’s Not the Cheatin’ Kind, and Believe, as well as dozen or so of their biggest hits. It was by farone of the best performances I’ve been to ever, so I’m glad I was able to squeeze into their second to last concert before they retire.

We got a late start on Sunday, since we didn’t even get back to our hotel room till midnight, but we set out as planned to the Albuquerque Zoo, then rode the little train to the aquarium and botanical gardens. Everything was in bloom, the animals were all out to enjoy the nice day, and the aquarium was so soothing. If you haven’t been, I suggest it as a lovely, inexpensive, all-day family outing. For $12 we were able to see all three parks as well as ride the train to and fro as many times as we wanted.
