Clintonville Businesses - Don't judge a marquee by it's cover

Pierce Cleaners sign 2007 Clintonville Businesses - Don't judge a marquee by it's cover?

A comment on Yelp.com from someone named Heather...  about the Pierce Cleaners sign reads:

"Well, don't just a marquee by its cover.  I found them to be lacking in the personality department and completely unconcerned with hearing about how I was prompted to come in because of their funny sayings on the marquee outside."

Clintonville Businesses -  Don't judge a marquee by it's cover? or Heather's "don't just a marquee by its cover"  must come from the phrase "Don't judge a book by it's cover" ... don't judge a marquee by it's cover (do marquees have covers?)

I believe Heather is saying just because the business has a clever sign don't expect the employees to have personality or want to engage you in conversation...  I guess they want to know if you have the ticket to pick up your laundry or dry cleaning... or what you want to drop off. Sparkling conversation... they have a marquee for that.  Or a much loved clever sign.

Personally I had never heard the Pierce Cleaners employees did not make the cleverest of conversation while taking in dirty laundry or even when returning sparkling clean shirts and neatly pressed laundry to customers. Not a customer myself.  I just love their sign.

Or did.  Heather's was just a funny Yelp review...  a sign of the times... Yelp.com does reviews of local businesses.  The clever sign at 5205 High St. got hit by a car in July 2010. I understand the sign is being repaired and will be back out on High St. being clever again soon.  A friend who uses Pierce Cleaners talked heard the sign will go back up.

Clintonville Businesses and those throughout Central Ohio...

In closing I want to remind businesses in Clintonville, Worthington, Westerville (thinking of a Westerville)  business with a marquee), Powell, Dublin etc.    "Well, don't just a marquee by its cover."

Maybe Heather walked in with a frown on her face or a "holier than thou" swagger. That will turn people off real quickly.

I am sure over the years they've had a stream of people attracted by the clever comments who want to chat and have unrealistic expectations...  it is a dry cleaner.

There's a particular catalog of real estate marketing items that is a delight to read.  I take that catalog and just have a ball reading it.  It's filled with funny pleasantries.  I ordered from them years ago and was pleased with the products.  But one day I needed to speak to them and the person on the phone was such a drip.  I just assumed one of the hiring requirements was that they be as pleasant as their catalog.  She wasn't.  And I didn't make that call with a frown or a "holier than thou" swagger.  I never ordered from them again.

I'd rather have my clothes clean, buttons intact and neatly pressed than pleasantries, personally.  It is not a cleaner on my daily route so  I have never used them, just enjoyed their sign immensely driving up and down High St.  My friend who told me the sign will be back up said "Carol" or "Carole" at Pierce Cleaners told him about it when he stopped to pick up his shirts... so "Carol" or "Carole"  is personable.

We ate at a high priced restaurant on High St.  on my birthday and I was thrilled with my filet and with the waiter having personality.  My SO did not like his fish much... he was pleased with a real nice thing our waiter did, though.  The waiter at the table next to ours had personality too... I think with a tip based economy personality and good service can get you good tips.

Not so sure a dry cleaning worker has the same incentive and I feel sorry for them having to entertain people walking in.... and their reputation being that they are not clever conversationalists.  I am sure Heather got over it....

Smiling and being pleasant doesn't cost anyone anything.  Entertaining is altogether a different thing.

Do I want competency plus a good attitude?  Yeah if I can get them.

I think Clintonville people value Pierce Cleaners, it's been there since 1946. I am sure they treat their customers fine and have lovely employees.  I did not check to see who Heather was, I am just tickled by her malapropisms and attitude in her Yelp comment.
