Crime: Blame It On The Landlord

There is no question about it.  The crime level in many parts of Baltimore City, as well as in some other major cities, is far higher than is acceptable.

There are many theories and opinions as to the cause.

There, also, have been many efforts to eliminate or, at least, reduce the crime to more reasonable levels.

But now, there seems to be an effort to place the blame, to some degree, on the landlords.

It is true that there is the occasional slum lord who needs to be cited and removed from the business, but by and large this is not the case.  Most landlords are responsible.

Somehow, the City of Baltimore has come to the conclusion that it should revoke the license of a particular landlord and relocate the tenants to other rental units based on the idea that the rental housing itself is causing the crime.

Trying to find someone to blame only keeps us from looking for solutions.

It is interesting that since the supreme court declared that police are not required to protect and prevent crime that the cities have foisted the responsibility off on to the property owners. But of course, they do not want the owners to own guns or take other steps to secure their property, just to keep this from happenning at their own risk. Plus, they make it next to impossible to evict tenants because of "suspicisous" behaviour.

Maureen,

You are right.  And, in this particular situation, the landlord made efforts to improve things by beefing up security, increasing lighting, and presenting a safety plan to the city, which was ignored.

Mike,

Unfortunately, there are plenty of guns, but they are in the hands of the criminals and not the law abiding citizens.

Ron,

This is a complete joke by the city.  The National Guard should be called in to keep order.

Ron,

The leaders of Baltimore City are a bunch of fools and this is a ridiculous idea.

Ron,

Keep them coming.  I need these kinds of big laughs.  Yes, it is so sad, that it is funny.

Ron,

There are new leases which indicate that the tenants are responsible for the first ten murders, before the landlord needs to take responsibility.

Ron,

Is not this the way of America?  If you can blame someone else or take from someone else, then you do it.
