SAFTEY FIRST WHILE SHOWING HOMES..............................

By

AND THE NEWS ROOM WHEN SILENT........... ALL JOKING ASIDE

I FEEL VERY STRONGLY ABOUT BEING CAUTIOUS WHILE SHOWING HOMES!  We just had a bulletin emailed to us from our local Central Valley Association of REALTORS which read:

ATTENTION! Nearby Incidents Suggest You Put Your Safey First!

You may have read or heard news about personal security issues for agents while showing properties. Recently, an agent was assaulted while showing property in the Greater Sacramento Area. Two other incidents involved suspicious calls to agents asking for after-hours meetings. While these specific incidents were not in San Joaquin, Stanislaus or West Merced counties, please be aware they did occur.

Remember to take extra caution anytime you are meeting someone for property showings, open houses or just to discuss buying or selling a home, especially if you will be alone.

September 9-15 is Agent Saftey Week. The NAR web siteprovides excellent agent saftey tips to consider both in and out of the office.

9 To 5      Here's my personal advise: ALWAYS listen to your inner spirit (you know, your gut feeling) if you are going to show a property to someone you don't feel comfortable with ask someone to go with you. It could be another agent or a family member just so you are NOT alone.  My husband has rode along with female agents before because they had a buyer that they didn't know and it made them feel safer.

BUYERS- this could apply to you also. Unfortunately it's best if you are cautious as well.

Talk To You Later!

I'm only happy when it (Active) Rains!

Sometimes we get so caught up in making the various ends work that we neglect our safety...Thanks for the reminder.

Good advice to all Marcy.  I actually have eliminated one of the problems by taking the less popular approach of having buyers follow me, instead of riding in my car.  I do so for various reasons that don't necessarily apply to safety issues, but it does serve that purpose as well.

Marcy, There was a post that relates to this a few weeks back.  HOW WOULD YOU FIGHT OFF AN ATTACKER?   This link should work.  Good info in it.

DANIELLE -  You're right we do that sometimes so that's why I posted this. Thanks for your comment.

ADAM - Having buyers follow you in their car is always a good idea, not only for safety reasons but for insurance reasons. But remember if you meet someone or someone follows you be wary if you plan on showing a vacant home. I always keep my buyers in front of me unless I have a real good repor with them. Thanks for your comment.

KENNETH - I didn't know that someone else wrote about this. I have only been on Active Rain for about 4 months but thanks for letting me know.

I agree.  I think many agents just don't realize the potential dangers.

Mike -  Yeah and I just saw a important message on another mls I belong to that a guy posing as a buyer met a female agent at a property then raped her and attempted to murder her in Hayward, CA. So I think it's easy to get excited when you have a buyer but a repor should be built up first so you don't get caught up in some persons sick game.

 Phew

Thanks for commenting.

Candy -  your so welcome. I think that it's important we protect ourselfs. We get busy showing homes and get excited about it that sometimes we don't think about who we may be showing a home to. Im glad I sparked some thought on it.
