Auntie Em! Auntie Em! Come here ToTo!

I think I know how Dorothy felt when that tornado hit her small Kansas town back in 1939.  I will never see the movie Wizard of Oz again without remembering today.                                                     Photo from usatoday.com

The day went like this.....showing a young couple three homes that they wanted to see.  No problem.  House #1 - very nice, but needs a lot of updating.  House #2 - very roomy, lots to offer, but still stuck in the 60s.  House #3 - BINGO!  It has everything that they asked for and more.

So this is good news.  And a couple hours later they ask to go back in and see it again.  Not a problem as the house is vacant.  I call the listing agent and let her know we are going back in - as a courtesy more than anything else.

The young couple decides that they want to write an offer.  OK!  But I want them to go home for a little while and think about how much they want their offer to be.  And they do.  Then they call me - again.

"Do you think it would be ok if we went back in that house again?  At your convenience of course.  I'd really like my sister to see it."  Now normally I would get a little exasperated, but I only live a few streets from this house and it's only 6:30, so what's the harm?

I tell them I'll be there in 30 minutes and head down the hall to change clothes.  I tell my husband to put his shoes on so that when I'm done we can go to dinner.  So far this is all pretty plain - just run of the mill.

Well - we are in the house, all parties are ooohing and aaahing in every room and then we hear the tornado sirens.  Loud.  Very loud.  OK - I look outside and it's a little dark, but not a big concern.  Yet.  And then the temperature dropped about 25 degrees in 15 seconds and the air got eerily still - for about 5 seconds.  I looked skyward and saw a very menacing sky >>>

I stared in disbelief at the most beautifully menacing (can you imagine?) miracle of Mother Nature's wrath that I have seen in a long time.  The clouds were in layers with alternating swirling motions.  Occasionally a huge bolt of lightning would flash across them.

As I'm standing there with my duh! face hanging out the neighbor sticks her head out and says, "You better get in the basement!  There's a tornado warning!!"  I thanked her for her concern and opened the door to tell my buyers and their family to head downstairs due to a very unsettling sky.  And they did - quite quickly actually.  LOL

Well, the skies got darker and darker while the air kept getting cooler.  And the winds were picking up considerably.  I ran to the car and grabbed my purse thinking...if the damned car blows away I don't want to have to get a new driver's license and credit cards.  That would be a real pain in the arse.  (It's a woman thing!)

Then I got to thinking....I should take some photos of this!  Aha!  But..........well.........the good camera is at home.  Another duh! moment.  But wait!  I have a camera phone!  That will work!  And it did.  Obviously.

We never did get hit with a true tornado - Thank God!  But I can tell you that the hair on the back of my neck was standing up for about 20 minutes.  Once the wind died down and the rain stopped we all parted ways and will meet in the morning to write their offer.

Oh - and the listing agent's sign blew right out of the metal frame and landed about 2 blocks away.  My client syas that is a sign that this house is supposed to be theirs.  Wish them luck - they are surely taken with this house!

What a great post!  Pictures too...what a good agent will do to accomodate their clients.  I haven't shown any homes during a tornado...but we don't get them often in Washington, D.C.

Thanks for the great story!

Carol- Praise God you didn't get swept away by a tornado!  Your pictures are awesome...but please take cover next time.  Alabama has been hit by too many tornadoes over the years.  The devastation and destruction is indescribable.

Carol:  First, I'm so glad it wasn't a tornado and that you and your clients and neighbors are alright!  Second, this cracked me up: "I ran to the car and grabbed my purse thinking...if the damned car blows away I don't want to have to get a new driver's license and credit cards.  That would be a real pain in the arse.  (It's a woman thing!)"  You're darn tootin it's a woman thing!!  Bless your heart, I would have done the same thing!

Yvette - I will do almost anything to accommodate a client - almost.  I think I'm going to draw a line when the tornado sirens wail though.  LOL  Thanks for stopping by.

Mary - Thanks for understanding.  LOL  I usually don't get quite as spooked, but when the hair on my neck stands up and won't go back down......       Thanks for stopping by.

Ray - No offense, but you can keep those quakes!  LOL  I'll take my chances with the twisters.  At least there is typically a bit of a warning.  Thanks for your support!

Renee - I made it through a few of these in Florida years back, but it's still a bit disconcerting - to say the least.  Thanks for visiting my blog.

Rosario - Truer words....    And while I love to travel, there is no place like home - with all its problems, politics, potholes and  - did I say politics?  LOL  Thanks for your comment.

Kris - Anyone that has ever had to replace those kinds of things knows that it is one huge pain in the .... well, you know.  I had my phone and keys in my pocket, but what was that going to do?  What was I going to do with those - dial up my purse and ask it to come back?  The car is easier to replace than personal items.  Glad to know I'm not alone in my thinking!  Thanks for your input!

Joan - a long, long time ago I had my wallet stolen while on the subway in Boston.  It was such a nightmare to replace everything that I swore that I would not go through that again!  LOL  And I certainly wasn't wanting to see that new Liz Claiborne purse go off into the clouds!  It's definitely something that only women understand!

Ted - Thank you!  LOL  I was a little irritated because I had left the 'good' camera at home and had to take photos with my darned phone, but all in all I think even that caught the turmoil in the sky.  And we did write the offer!  Can't let some transient storm ruin a whole day!

Diane - I don't know about brave - it may be more like nutso!  LOL   Thanks for stopping by!

Carol, What terrific shots you got from your cell phone!  I, too, had my purse stolen once and I would have done exactly the same thing!  Replacing everything and getting the locks changed might have been worse then the pending Tornado :)  Yep, it's a woman thing!

Carole - I was surprised about the quality of the cell phone camera photos, but I'm glad the photos came out at all!  And yes - I believe I would walk through fire to save the purse and contents!  All that chasing around and replacing/canceling/reopening stuff is a nightmare.

Lysa - Yep - it's all in the priorities.  LOL

Great story Carol!  I think of you now when they talk about Toledo on the weather, so I thought of you a bunch of times lately.  I saw Toledo and Findley on the national news over the weekend.

Maureen - Toledo didn't really get too much - just some trees down and things like that.  Nothing like Findlay's flooding.  I feel so bad for those folks.  They have lost so much.
