It's nice to know that some things in life are still free. One free pleasure I have been enjoying the past couple of years is the Rohnert Park-Cotati Library in Rohnert Park CA. I paid a visit to the library yesterday to ask permission to snap a few photos for my blog. I had no idea I would have the personal pleasure of sitting down and talking with Nancy Kleban, the Branch Manager.

Rohnert Park-Cotati LibraryThe Rohnert Park-Cotati Library is just 7 years new with over 90,000 books, DVD's, CD's, magazines and newspapers! There are over 20 computers for those who need free access to the internet. And in February 2009, the Rohnert Park-Cotati branch of the Sonoma County Library system was the first to install a Radio Frequency ID system for self-checkout.

The RFID system allows a person to scan the barcode on their FREE library card, and will then ask for a 4 digit PIN. Once the system has identified you, you will be prompted to place your items on what looks like a rubber mat in front of the screen. The system's antenna will read the ID tags on your goodies and will display an itemized list. You then get to select whether you would like a printed receipt, an e-mailed receipt or both.

Radio Frequency ID self-checkout systemWorried about past due fees? As long as you have internet access, you will never have to worry about returning anything late. You will receive a friendly e-mail reminding you that your items are due back soon. I use my printed receipt as a book marker so I can always check the receipt to see when a book I am reading needs to be returned.

Another great feature of the Rohnert Park-Cotati Library is their book store where you can BUY books for dirt cheap. The book store is run by the Friends of the Library, a group of dedicated volunteers who work very hard to organize the incoming donations, run the book store, and put on twice-a-year book sales (there's one coming up on October 1-2, 2010).

Sonoma County Library CardThe Rohnert Park-Cotati Library is a FREE community resource, you really should check it out. If you haven't been to a library in decades (like me), about the only thing that is still true is that you need to keep your voice down. Other than that, you will find yourself walking into a whole new world. Come on in and apply for your FREE library card today!

For years I checked out books from my local library.  Now I usually buy them, sometimes used, but I just HATE to not keep them when I like them. I donate ones I read and don't really like.  But now I wonder if my library might sell some good condition used books, gotta check that out.

Tammy - I have donated about 50 books to this library, it feels good to donate and it frees up room on the bookshelves for classics that I want to keep forever ... like Green Eggs and Ham.

Cynthia I haven't taken a trip to the library in a while.  I'm like Tammy (a book keeper).  I could literally stay at the library from open to close.  Can I substitute bacon for the ham, I'm sure the Dr. won't mind.

I'm a huge fan of our local library here. It's neat just to go and sit down and read in a nice quiet place sometimes, and since it's so underused, chances are no one will ever find out my secret little hiding spot,

Cynthia, two things:  1) IMO, localism isn't localism unless the libraries are covered at some point. Thanks for doing so.

2) Once the Berke Breathed books I bought have been circulated locally (and that will take a few months), I'm going to mail them to you for your bookshelves, to re-circulate, or to give to your library.  Why? Because if not for your cartoon blog, I would not have rediscovered BB!

Charita - as long as the bacon is green!

Paul - I stumbled into the library in Weaverville (West of Redding) to print out a listing agreement while I was on vacation. It was NOTHING like the one I have in Rohnert Park. I had no idea what a gem the Rohnert Park-Cotati library is.

Malcolm - when I was studying for my broker's license, I would go to this library and find a quiet place to read. That's how I discovered it, I had out-of-town visitors and I needed a cool, quiet place to go. Soon after I applied for my FREE library card. I now have a few classic books on my bookshelf from the Friends of the Library book store. I bought a Michael Chrichton hard back for $1.50!

Mary Kay - I would be honored to receive your BB books, they would stay on my bookshelves!!
