We've Made it Halfway Through the 2010 Hurricane Season - No Major Storms in Florida Yet!

By
Real Estate Agent with CENTURY 21 Bill Nye Realty, Inc.

Two weeks ago, at the start of September, we passed the halfway point of the 2010 hurricane season here in the Sunshine State. The season runs from June 1st to November 30th of each year. So far we have had no major storms at all. A few states to our north were not as lucky a week or so ago.

We have had a summer that seemed rainier than normal, but we needed the extra moisture to replenish our underground aquifers that have become depleted over the past years. The extra precipitation also greatly diminished the risk of wildfires. I can't remember hearing of a single one so far this summer near here. Just a few years ago we had major ones each season due to the dry conditions.

2010 Hurricane Season half over The only current storm in the Atlantic that might reach the US is Hurricane Igor and it is still far out to the east. If you click on the picture to the left you can see a slightly larger version of this storm and its projected path. It would appear that Bermuda is more at risk at this time than we are. Certainly looks likely that it will miss Zephyrhills anyway. Let's hope so! But keep in mind that over time conditions can change and so can the track that any hurricane takes. So watch the news and be aware of what is happening weather-wise.

Much of my information comes from the National Hurricane Center. They follow tropical depressions, tropical storms, and hurricanes from birth to death. It can be a useful site to visit. If you would like to try it out, click on the following link: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov I suggest you "bookmark it" or "make it a Favorite" for future reference if you live in an area that can be affected by tropical storms or hurricanes. You will find it interesting and helpful to track the path of each storm.

You can also find out how to prepare for hurricanes and other disasters at the following state site: http://www.floridadisaster.org/  Do not wait until a storm is upon us to prepare your home and family. Hopefully we will make it through 2010 with no major storms paying us a visit, but you never know. Better safe than sorry!
