Plantains - Bananas on Steroids??

The other day while shopping with my hubby at our local Costco in Nanuet, NY, I asked him to please pick out a bunch of bananas that were not overripe.  I wanted them for later in the week when the grand-kids converged.  Since most of the lot were ready for eating, he had a hard time finding some that fit the bill.

After a few minutes of searching, misssion accomplished, or so he thought.

We get home and while unloading and putting away the groceries, I'm searching for the bananas.  What I find are plantains.  Though I know how to differentiate between the two, I've no idea what to do with a plantain.  Is it a vegetable or a fruit?  Do I eat it raw or cooked?  Is it ripe when it's green or when it's yellow?  Are plantains just Bananas on Steroids?  So, I did a little research.

  • While there are many differences between Plantains and bananas, both are very nutritious and both are rich in Vitamins A and C and high in fiber.
  • They look alike, but plantains are longer than bananas and have a much thicker skin.
  • Bananas can be eaten raw, made into chips, preserved or cooked but plantains need to be cooked before they can be eaten.  They are rich in starch and low in sugar and become slightly sweeter as they ripen.  They remain firm even when cooked and are considered to be the "potatoe of the Caribbean".  A plantain changes colors as it ripens from green to yellow and when fully ripened, turns black.
  • Bananas are considered a fruit and plantains are usually treated as a vegetable.

So now that I know what to do with my plantains, I'm off to cook them.  As for the hubby, I don't ask him to pick out my fruit anymore, or my vegetables. -  That way, I know what I'm getting.

Thanks for the tip. The next time my wife asks me to go to the store and buy bananas, I'll ask her to change the oil in the car while I'm gone. :o]

Leah, that is so funny.  You must let us know how they turned out.  I bought some one time and looked up recipes.  Cooked them but didn't like them.  I think I must have cooked them while they were still green.. ?

Leah, a lot of the south and central American restaurants in this area do amazing things with plantains.  As I'm too lazy to cook, I stick with good old bananas!

Now is this the perfect group for this post or what!  I had no idea about plantains - and a vegie to boot.  So we're not all fruits?  Ok maybe nuts!

Larry, that would be enough to discourage her from sending you shopping.

Carla - Then you can let me know how you prepared yours and how that tasted.

Judi - I looked up recipes as well and am waiting until they ripen some more so that I get a sweeter taste.

Pat - I'd probably stick with bananas too, if I liked them more.  They're a South American/Carribean staple so I imagine they've perfected a whole slew of yummy recipes.

Anna - Nothing nuts about you, nutty and fruity maybe, but in a good way.  And yes, this was the perfect group for this post!

That sounds par for the course for me when my wife sends me to pick up some things at the grocery store. She usually sends me for something specific and fairly easy. That works ok, like bread or eggs. I usually screw up on other things. Have fun with the new possibilities. Enjoy.

I never knew the difference, thank you.  I know I love plantains fried though.  Also, I would have thought they were shorter than bananas.  Who knew.

Lora, that's too funny.  I like plantain though, the only way I tried was fried, they were good.  How did yours turn out?

Rita - I've never tasted plantains before.  Not sure that I would try them again.  Maybe I'll try frying them next go round.

Hi Leah-these are two of my favorite yellow fruits.  Please don't try eating plantain like you do a banana it is too starchy.  You can do a lot with plantain, you can fry it, roast it.  The green one you could even cut it into pieces soak in salt then fry, I could go on and on.
