How to Clean Your Interiors With Safe & Green Methods

House decorating and air cleaning products are a major cause of indoor pollution. The evaporation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from several of these products is to blame for the elevated level of pollutants in the house, which is more than 100 times more than outdoors. The following recommendations will help to lessen the level of pollutants present in your house.

One simple step is to wait for a time when the weather is cooperating and open the windows and let them all out! Room fresheners and fragranced cleaning products should be avoided at all costs for they have many VOCs and other poisonous chemicals. The destruction done to nature through the use of VOCs is only matched by the degree to which these products poison the air and cause ailments of the eye, skin and respiratory system. A vase of flowers will refresh any room naturally.

A report conducted some ten years ago by New Scientist revealed surprising data about aerosol sprays and air fresheners. Infants below six months of age living in homes where these products were used experienced 30 percent more ear infections and 22 percent higher cases of diarrhea; and moms were 19 percent more likely to suffer from depression and suffered 25 percent more headaches.

When choosing “green” cleaning options, consumers must be aware of a phenomenon known as “green washing.” This refers to the assumption that a product is non-toxic just because the word “natural” appears on the label. The word is not only vague; it is also unregulated and can be used on anything and everything without qualification. Consumers are advised by David Steinman, coauthor of The Safe Shopper’s Bible, to concentrate solely on the product label and seek out eco-friendly components that are “known cleaning performers.” A few of these consist of: grain alcohol, coconut or other plant oils in detergents and plant-oil disinfectants such as eucalyptus, rosemary or sage.

You can also clean effectively with products made at your house. Mix a few safe components such as water, baking soda, plain old soap, vinegar, washing soda (sodium carbonate), lemon juice, and borax. Learn about “green” housecleaning products and you will be well on your way to maintaining a “green” home.

I have two infants myself. I am looking around at the air fresheners plugged into the walls as I write this. Great post. Brought up some of which most probably do not realize or take into consideration.

Might have to take you up on some suggestions here!
