Iran's so called "blogfather" sentenced to prison

Hossein Derakhshan, a Canadian-Iranian, is sentenced to almost 20 years in prison for blogging.

CNN and many other news outlets, reported today that Hossein Derakhshan has been sentenced to 19 1/2 years in prison in Iran. Can you imagine being sentenced to prison for free speech, sharing your visions and daily life experiences with your audience?

Stay tuned since I am sure this is not the last headline we will see on this subject.

What would happen here in the United States if our government goes after the bloggers in the word of blogging?

...well there are regimes that are very afraid of free speech... and they'll do everything in their power to suppress it...but in the end it is going to be futile... unfortunately it is not going to help this guy right now...

HI Anja,

Good post, and yes it is concerning that our lives as bloggers are an open book for others to judge and determine if we fit the mold.

Recently one of our own active bloggers (terry) was more or less forced out of AR, for what some others perceived to be an in-appropriate comment. TV shows get cancelled, advertising money dictates what we see, hear or experience and public opinion directs policy and tolerance.

Lets not kid ourselves, freedom of speach, even in North America, becomes very fragile the moment it does not fit our style, or agree with our beliefs.

It is more like Freedom of Speech, provided that....... (not the same thing at all).

I could not imagine a world without bloggers. Free speech is a oncept that is getting so prevalent, I am not sure how any government entity anywhere in the world is going to be able to stop it, which is a good thing. Where do you find this stuff???

Gary,

I just have an interest in a large variety of things including what is happening in the rest of the world. That does mean I have to read international newspapers. I picked this up in a foreign newspaper, did the research and found more information "locally". This news headline caught my attention since we are so closely linked to this type of free speech.
