Look into my crystal ball

What I need is a clairvoyant. Someone who can see the future. Do you know anyone like that?  Have them call me. I'll put them to work right away at a very good salary. 

I wish it were that easy. Just stare at the globe and the answers appear. Well, that's not likely to happen.

Still it seems that every year I get more people asking me those impossible to answer questions. How old is it? How long will it last? Does it leak when it rains? Well here's the answer to all of them..... I don't know.

Sure, in some instances I can help you. Often the answer can be found. Then I'm a hero. Sometimes the manufacturer dates their appliances, not always. As for the lifespan of anything, it depends. How old is it? How well has it been maintained? How much use or abuse has it had? This information is not always easy to discover. It may be impossible to discover.

If I try to find out and can't, I'm the bad guy. If I try to find out and get bad data , I'm the bad guy. If I say I don't know, I'm the bad guy.   Are you starting to see a pattern? (I'm not really a bad guy, honestly)

Seriously, how do we fix this? I think the answer is obvious. Be reasonable. Make your demands realistic. Don't expect miracles. And remember, none of us has a crystal ball.
