Solar system installed on Roof at Willard School - Concord Massachusetts
Willard Elementary is an award winning Green School that was built in 2009. As a Green School, Willard is infused with natural light, state-of-the-art high efficiency heating and cooling system and many recycled materials were used throughout building.
As of September the Concord Elementary Willard School began generating electricity with the newly installed solar photovoltaic (PV) system on the roof. The system has already generated enough electricity to operate a TV from more than 35,000 hours. It has saved the town almost $1000 and reduced the green-house gasses emitted in order to provide electricity to the school by more than 4 tons.
Willard School is having an open house on November 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. which you will be able to touch a solar panel and watch a video about how the PV system was installed on the roof.
Here are some of the ways the Willard School has implemented GREEN initiatives:
- Tree Preservation: when building the new school they kept as many of the mature trees as possible
- Shared facilities: school was designed with in-a -park setting for community for sports and recreation.
- Playground: minimal asphalt, shade trees and drought tolerant plants
- Wetlands Protection: stayed within the 50 foot buffer zone to protect the wetlands
- Natural Light: school was built with lots of natural light with light adjusting sensors and motion sensors.
- Water Preservation: installed water fountains in all the classroom so children could refill water bottles
Concord, Mass is very proud of their Green school!
