Friday's Fotos: What Some People Will Do For A Great Shot!

By

I took this at last Saturday's Rally to Restore Sanity down at the National Mall.  As we were trying to get out of the middle of the mob and reached the area south of the National Gallery, I noticed people climging all over this piece of scupture to get a better shot of the goings on.  And while I thought about joining them for a nanosecond, my little voice said,

"Whew!  Pat!  This is a piece of art!  Climbing it would not be good form!"

A minute or so later, Officer Friendly arrived on the scene and shooed everyone off, but something tells me that as soon as he left, more people would scurry up to try the same thing.

I'll have to admit, tacky or not, it sure was tempting!

Great visual.  I would argue that an artist, could add humans to this piece, perhaps dressed in specific colors and placing them along those blocks could also create an interesting artistic statement.  But only if the creator of this original piece was again the artist.

Pat, Had I been there I would have succumbed to temptation and been right up there with the others.  That pice just invites climbers.

That would go well outside a Frat house on a college campus somewhere!

Looks like an invitation to achieve great heights to me. I would most certainly climb. And if I were ten again I'd challenge others to a game of King of the Hill.

all three of my daughters were there, they said the last 15 minutes was worth the whole time traveling and waiting...they also commented that the media did an awful job of portraying what the event was about.

I would be up there hanging off that sculpture too!  It's beautiful AND useful.  I actually thought it was there to take a group photo.  Some sort of stand.

That is a very surreal looking photo! Almost looks like these people are superimposed on a cartoon background. I would have had the same first thoughts, Pat, about how you treat a piece of artwork. But, as my 12-year old said when I showed him that picture, "Mom, it looks like it was meant for climbing".

Interesting photo, and I agree with you, I would not have climbed it either - for safety and in good taste.

Pat- don't know what the artist's intention was but I guess sometimes we forget where we are and go with the mob mentality.

Pat, aren't our ancestor mammals who can swing & climb...so we are keeping up with our genetic habits.

Pat - I would be afraid of a piece of that tumbling down and being on it when that happened!

Richard, I wouldn't bet my real estate license that they were all toursits!

Mike, yeah!  That's what I thought, except they take the whole "art" thing really seriously around here.

Indera and Andrea, oh, I was tempted!  And Andrea, I am so sane it is boring!

Lenn, attractive nucince is a good description.  The steps were really narrow and I was waiting for someone to come tumbling down.

Karen, it was made of cinder blocks!  Hello!

Lora, I did have some concerns about getting down.

Glenn, or an invitation to take a great photo!

Chris, OK, now I am having regrets for not scaling the cinder blocks!

Hannah, I guess this was as much fun as the photo I'd have gotten if I'd scaled the thing.

Chris Ann,  it would be a great place to have an Active Rain gathering and get a quick group shot when the Park Police are giving out parking tickets.  Do they do that?

Patricia - I would have probably been one of the first ones to scramble atop it, and then wondered while laying on my back looking at the sky, why I had done that. . .LOL  I'm still envious that you attended that rally!  It's the first one that has made sense to me in a VERY LONG TIME!

First, I'm jealous that you went there.  Second, I think these guys all had the right idea - get out of the way and enjoy the view.

Looking at the picture before reading the post, I thought that it was in fact a climbing post to climb up and take pictures and I thought it was great that you took a picture of the climbing post!  It is an unusual piece of art and nonetheless great for taking pictures from or just sitting down on for a rest.

Thanks for sharing.
